Where Did The Superstition Come From....Broken Mirrors...

Have you ever wondered where certain superstitions come from?  A friend recently forwarded me an article, that I thought was interesting.  In it, it discussed the superstition of breaking a mirror and you having seven years of bad luck.

Cracked Mirror

Where did this superstition come from?  People once thought that a mirror held the soul of the person looking into it.  So, it made sense that if you cracked a mirror, you would experience equally traumatic consequences.  The time period comes from a belief that the body renews itself every seven years.

Kristin that's so interesting. I didn't realize they thought the body renewed itself every 7 years. Thanks for the info.

Hi Kristin,

well I have broken my share of mirrors. I never knew about the body renewing itself every 7 years.  Makes sense.

Superstitions do seem to have some kind of hold on us. The broken mirror, crossed fingers, Friday the 13th, the sidewalk crack, the black cat, walk under the ladder, the 13th floor...  Guess we are all so busy on our own fast spinning merry-go-rounds that in today's world, it just does not get as much attention :)

Kristin, I have heard of this one, but not the reason why it was bad luck.  I once broke Sharon's make up mirror and that was very bad luck for me!!!!!

Hello Kristin ... This is very interesting and I have heard stories similar to this over the years. This "Bad Luck" has not effected Vegas Bob because over the 40 years as a "Glazier" Glass installer I have broken hundreds of mirrors by accident and installing. Your post has been featured to the group:

Kristin - I should stay away from people broke mirrors. I think, another person told me the same, broken mirrors causes seven years bad luck.
