Where Did The Superstition Come From.....Cricket In The House...

In follow up to my blog post yesterday, I am continuing on some superstitions and their origins.

Field Cricket

Have you ever heard that a cricket in the house is good luck?  So do not ever kill one!

Where did this saying come from?  The cricket's rise to lucky-charm status may have evolved from its chirping abilities.  It was thought that their singing could predict the weather, changes in luck, or even the arrival of friends.  Their harmless nature also earned them a place of welcome, at least as far as insects go, inside the home.

Thanks so much for the trivia lesson.  They do sound beautiful.  (but they really don't look so beautiful).

I did not know this Kristin, I thank you so much for sharing. I have a few camping out in my laundry room. I think I'll invite them to move in permanently.

Kristin, I don't know when the last time I saw a cricket. I may have to import them and place them in my listings.

Thanks for the info.

I personally don't believe in superstitions, but it's a fun trivia. I love to hear crickets chirp away their song. And to think they achieve the sound by simply rubbing their skinny scrawny scrappy hind legs together.

Never heard that one.  But I have a very superstitious girl.  NO ONE gives knives in my family ... never ever...  And when I visit someone I MUST leave by the same door as I arrived.

When I lived in New Jersey we had cricket into the home . . . . so I must be in good shape.

Good luck and success.

I was not aware of a cricket in the house bringing good luck.  We had a cricket in our office that traveled via a mum plant.  It just about drove everyone nuts.  One day an agent saw the cricket and we put it outside...

I hope that a cricket in the house is good luck. However, I prefer for the crickets to stay outside!

I wonder if anybody uses little cricket cages these days.

I guess it is luckier than termites.  I have seen little metal grass hoppers used as decor.

Hello Kristin ... Vegas Bob is in for some very "Bad Luck" ... Over the years VB has always searched out Crickets in his home only to kill them. VB is a very light sleeper and these critters keep VB from getting the proper rest. "Sorry" and your post has been featured to the group:
