Southern Maryland Crabbing
Do you like seafood? Does the idea of dipping fresh Maryland crab into hot dripping butter make your mouth water? You don't have to go to a local seafood restaurant. When you go Southern Maryland crabbing, you know it's fresh!
In July 2011, the Baltimore Sun reported that two of the top 10 crabbing spots in Southern Maryland were right here in Calvert County: Solomons Island Fishing Pier (Rte 2) and Kings Landing Park (off Rte 4). Talk about eating local! Crab season began on April Fool's Day and will continue through December 15th. You'd be a fool not to get the freshest crab possible by trying your hand at Southern Maryland crabbing.
Commercial crab fishermen spend thousands of dollars out at sea. But recreational crabbing can be done for free from the shoreline, off of the docks, from a pier, on a bridge or from a boat without a license as long as you use a dip net or hand line. Trapping requires a license, which will cost anywhere between $2 and $10, depending on where you live and the reason you are crabbing. There are limits to how many crabs you can catch to take home for personal consumption. Visit the Maryland Department of Natural Resources for the entire list of rules and regulations before you head out. You don't want to risk any fines.
Get your food fresh from the sea and onto your family's dining room table. Southern Maryland crabbing means the absolute freshest seafood in town. And, it can be a fun time in the process. Everyone should try it at least once.
