Be Careful California - Rattlesnakes are out

Southern Pacific Rattlesnake

I finally had my first rattlesnake meeting.  Since moving here last July, I've been on numerous trails with warnings posted about mountain lions and rattlers, but until this past weekend, I'd seen neither.  Hiking around the Mount Wilson area in the Angeles National Forest, a friend and I ventured off-trail to do some exploring, and lying in our path was a 4 foot Southern Pacific Rattlesnake, just basking in the sun.

As the weather here warms up, it's important to remember we're not the only ones that like to get outdoors.  Just a day after my first sighting, a friends dog got a little too curious and was bitten.  The day of my sighting, another friend sent a picture of a baby rattler on a different trail.  I've lived here since last July and hadn't seen or heard of anyone running into a rattlesnake, and then all of the sudden in one weekend there were 3 different sightings.  Safe to say for the next couple months we need to be extra attentive when outdoors.

Rattlesnakes live from sea level inland to the desert, and to elevations above 10,000 ft, so no matter where you live, take caution to keep an eye out to avoid startling a sunbathing snake.  Rattlesnakes get a bad reputation, but are actually pretty shy animals - they will almost always take an escape route rather than get involved with a human, so unless we startle them or get too close, the chances of a bite are extremely low.

Plan on spending a lot of time outdoors over the next few months (of course you do!)?  Read these tips on what to do if you meet a rattlesnake, along with advice on what to do if you are unfortunate enough to suffer a bite.

John, That is not a meeting I ever want to have. It gives me chill bumps just thinking about it.

Debbie, I try not to think about how many times I've probably unknowingly been within a few feet of these guys.  Seeing one definitely was a reminder to be careful though!

John, I hope the dog is okay.  While I was out on my trail walk with my friend on Monday, she put out a scream that scared me to pieces.  She saw a lizard about 8 inches long scurry across the trail just in front of us. I simultaneously screamed even prior to seeing what caused he to scream. It was hilarious. Then we hear someone on the other side of the trail scream ... clearly mocking us.  The walk was what I needed. I could have lived without my friend screaming and scary me to pieces. So glad you caught sight to the rattlesnake before it caught sight of you.

Of all my tromping around in the Southwest in my younger days the only rattlesnake that I saw up close and personal like was in Northern California.  Late night on a fire we were on a 10 mile march up a mountain when I felt a tug on my boot and a rattle, turned on my headlamp to see a small rattler attached to my boot and clearly upset at me and the rest of our crew invading his trail.

I was too tired and in too much of a hurry to do more than knock him off my boot and off the trail with my shovel.  When one of my friends was retelling the story, my boss got very upset that I did not take the time to eliminate this fellow and prevent a future hiker from encountering him.

Yeah I am pretty sure I can safely say that scared or at least shocked the crap out of you! I am sure I would have been caught off guard and not wanted to get anywhere near that

Hi John,

I HATE snakes.  Fortunately we don't have very many around here.  Interesting post!

John I respect all animal life and never venture off trails on a rare occasion when I go for a stroll. Operating word is very rare occasion:)), Like Kathleen I hope the dog was OK. On a side note last time I saw a Rattler & Baby Rattler when I was in Ranger School:)), Endre

I like hiking, but I don't go often since it is not safe to go alone( yep, because of those guys, but also coyotes~ those new kinds are large and not afraid of people, and <you never know who> . Btw, a cell phone connection often does not work in some wild areas( at least mine: At&t).

Stay safe!

Inna - you should get out more, there are some really great spots pretty close to LA.  I don't mind coyotes, but I'm always wary of snakes.  You are right w/the cell phone connection, it doesn't exist once you get into the mountains (I'm AT&T, too).

Endre - I had no idea you went to Ranger school, that is so cool.  I've applied for Ranger programs in a couple national parks because I always thought it would be the greatest job.

Wayne & Jean - you don't have too many to worry about where you are. They're much more common here, especially the rattlers.

David - in all honesty, I've been waiting to see one since I got out here!  I'm fascinated by them, but respect them too much to bother with them.  Still anxious to see a 6+ footer.

Bob - Glad that snake only got your boot, the babies can be more dangerous than the big ones.  I don't hope to ever get that close.  If a big one bit me, I might have to return the favor by having it for dinner, I've heard rattlesnake is pretty good!

Kathleen - glad you enjoyed the walk, and the lizards startle me regularly, some are huge and they seem to be everywhere!
