1. Safety
Factoring in data from the FBI on reports of both violent and property crimes, Safewise named Glen Carbon number twelve on it’s list The 50 Safest Cities in Illinois. Safewise is a site that offers guidance and reviews on home security systems. I have always felt pretty safe, comfortable, and at ease in Glen Carbon and its surrounding communities. With the purchase of our home (even though it was a newer, move-in ready house) Nick and I quickly learned, there’s aways something… something that needs fixed, something you want to update, a lawn that needs attention, and so on. Living in a community with such low crimes rates gives homeowners one less thing to think about. In a world where crime is relentless and everyday there’s a story on the news that makes you cringe, it’s nice to feel safe at home and in your own community.
2. Community
You may remember, back in 2009, CNN Money voted Glen Carbon to be on it's Top 100 Places to Live list. Factoring in income, cost of living, and sense of community, among many other statistics. It is a charming community filled with history and spirit. Each year Glen Carbon hosts Glen Fest – A festival of music, food, and family fun, Homecoming – complete with rides, entertainment, and parade; a Scarecrow Building Contest, and so much more! Glen Carbon sits within Edwardsville school district, a consistently top ranked school in Illinois (ranked 10 out of 10 by greatschools.org). It’s great to live in a community that offers so much to its residents. Just writing this post makes me appreciate it more and want to take more advantage of what Glen Carbon has to offer. It truly is a great place to live and raise a family.
3. Business and Offerings
Glen Carbon is home to a variety of businesses and restaurants serving the community, access points to the areas beloved MCT Trails, the locally famous “covered bridge”, and Minor Park – where you’ll find all the local youth sledding on snow days.
The Glen Carbon Centennial Library has even received accolades - Awarded Best Small Library in America by Library Journal in 2010. A member of the Lewis & Clark Library System, the Glen Carbon Centennial Library has access to nearly any title you could desire, including a vast digital collection for your eReader... don't have an eReader - they are also available to check out. The community library offers programs and classes for people of all ages. I love taking my son, JP, for story-time. There's also a great play area for kids, and even kiosks where kids can listen to books and interact with the story. My favorite part - the (donation requested) coffee bar and the grand fireplace flanked with armchairs for a cozy place to curl up with a book. It's just a great place to spend time.
Glen Carbon really seems to do everything right. Ready to move?
