TIME ~ ANOTHER VIEWPOINT
Time is always the same, a minute is 60 seconds, an hour 60 minutes, a day 24 hours, a week 7 days, a month 30 or 31 days, 4 weeks sometimes 5 in a month, 12 months to a year, 52 weeks in a year and 365 days to a year. Time feels like it goes so fast and as one grows in their years it seems to go faster with each passing day and year. Yet time has not changed and does not change at least not much, unless perhaps you travel at the speed of light or travel in space.
Our perceptions change on the way we experience time as we are constantly confronted by a clock, our smart phones or computers. We have an over reliance on technology, always checking our email or the social media sites. These things take us out of both the past as well as the future into a heightened state of being focused, if you will, on just what is right in front of us. Worrying about what may or may not happen in the minutes beyond where we are now.
It can minimize our quality of life, and take away the joy that we should be getting from everyday life. With constant access to technology we seem to speed up time for ourselves, which can create a need for everything to happen right now with the press of a button.
So even though the measuring of time remains the same, it would be good to find the balance and learn mindfulness of the present or attentiveness to the present without the aid of technology. Practices such as meditation allows us to bring ourselves into the true present moment which can literally slow down the sense of time by shifting the brain's attentional resources and expand the present moment.
Please do not misunderstand, I believe in technology. What it does for us in business and staying connected when we need to be. I also believe in slowing down time a bit and taking the time for ourselves, bringing ourselves into the present moment to enjoy and appreciate what is around us and the people around us. Taking a step back, breathing deeply and seeing your surroundings with a different view, even if only for a few moments.
This is what has been happening for me over the last six months and I have come to appreciate the time I am able to sit in our backyard, watching the birds, enjoying the view and breathing in deeply the life I love.
