Pergolas...Any ideas??

Hello my fellow rainers...I am embarking on a project of making a red cedar pergola with material from my property.

this is not sturdy enough for the look we are seeking...

I have been looking on line to find pictures of more rustic looking pergolas but so far, I have not had too much luck.  I am reaching out here to see if anyone has an ideas.  The dimensions of the pergola that we will be building are 14 x 18.

This is the closest thing I can find to show the look we are after but this is a gazebo...thanx in advance for any help...

Come on those aren't pergolas, those are pagodas according to my wife.  She had me rolling the other night telling me that they made awnings for pagodas.  It took me a while to figure out she was talking about our pergola out back.

Patrice, I found a video of how to build a pergola in the Bob Vila's website. This is the link. I also found this website with some pictures that may give you some ideas. When you are done please share some pictures with us. Have fun!

Do you want free standing or attached to the house?  If free standing, I wouldn't use cedar for the posts, not strong enough structurally.  Most kit built or factory built units are pretty spindly.  Check on Fine Homebuilding's web site.  I recall there being a pretty well built pergola in one issue during the past year or two.  I personally have designed and built quite a few over the years, but never did rustic.

Hi David, I had it built and will be featuring some pictures when I do some decorating...It is free standing but we used sono tubes to secure it instead of the house and we used cedar trees as posts.  It looks cool!!  It just needs some sprucing to fit in better...
