I can remember as a child enjoying watching my dad fly a kite. I would always get so excited when he said it was "kite" weather. We would load up in the van and head to the store to pick out a kite. This was my favorite part. Of course, I liked the girlie kites. I loved the ones that were loaded with color and had numerous pieces attached. We had so much fun- my dad and I. We use to have a huge field behind the home that I grew up in. I remember being blessed with excitement as we headed out to the field and got ready for "kite" day. Dad would hand me the roll of string and allowed me to walk as far as I could....then I would scream "I'm ready" and up it would go and down it would come. I wasn't the best at flying kites but my dad was. I have so many good memories of that.

I went downtown last week to site see a little and notice a couple flying a kite. I zoned out a little as I watched. I started thinking of all the kite flying I did as a child and how I loved doing it with my dad. You know, I have a little one. Of course, he's not old enough to fly a kite but he's old enough to understand the beauty of it. So, now it's my turn to pass on the tradition. I was totally elated when I heard about the Baton Rouge Kite Festival. I wondered if I could possibly get my dad to go just for old times sake.

The Baton Rouge Kite Festival will be Friday, April 4 from 9-2 pm and Saturday, April 5 from 9-6 pm. Friday is actually going to be student day. Something I am really looking forward to seeing is the "Kites will light up the sky". It's going to be held from 7-7:30 pm, it sounds exciting. Not only will there be kite flying but there will also be entertainment. There will be music by "Classic Sounds by Jude", Dustin Ray & The Southern Groove and a special appearance by Roland Doucet.

Lindsay - that sounds like fun to me, too.  I have 9 brothers and sisters, grew up with not much money, but we were all very enthusiastic kite-flyers!

Virginia- I grew up without a lot of money too. I guess that is why I was so excited everytime my dad said we were going to go buy a kite. It's good cheap fun!

Debra- "Goody Goody Gumdrops". That's my inner giddy girl speaking! lol

How special and yes I have "Kite Memories" too :) I have 3 sisters and we have 8mm movies of us flying out kites in a field of the home we lived in - this was back in the 60's. Kites were sticks and paper. I have a real nice kite for ocean beach flying - there is a town close that has a festival. Thanks for sharing!!
