Athlete Drinking Juice

We all know that drinking plenty of water is a requirement for optimal health.  Getting water into the body is the only the first step to hydration however.  To keep it there, and get it into cells and tissues, we need electrolytes like potassium and sodium.  For optimum hydration, try to keep those two electrolytes in balance.  Most of us get enough sodium, but could increase our intake of potassium-rich foods.  You know about bananas being a good source of potassium, but also chard, potatoes and avocado are also great choices.

Hello Kristin, I take a pill for potassium every morning and eat a banana every day but I still need to drink more water.

Kristin, I've incorporated a "Nutribullet" power drink into my daily regimen and that includes usually having part of an avocado in it to make it creamy. I can't seem to enjoy bananas as much--I've tried over and over!

And OF COURSE, lots of water. Keeps that skin youthful!

Reminds me of the days way back when I was a Marathon runner and hitting the wall , repeatedly around the 20 mile mark and wishing I had hydrated better.

The problem is, by the time we are thirsty, its too late, we can not get enough water into us to stave off the negative impact of being  dehydrated.

As Kristin pointed out, its the balance that we need, when the balance is out of whack, we can expect some discomfort to set in.

Isn't CHEESE a great source of these electrolytes like potassium and sodium?

Wonder where we can get some CHEESE :) ?

I take potassium and magnesium supplements to keep leg cramps down and still eat vitamin and mineral rich foods. They are so needed for good health.

Kristin, good information- and right about not worrying about sodium intake.  We get plenty of that each day.  Good to hear that avocados are a good source of potassium.

This is excellent advice for good health. Some seniors need to watch their own test results. My wife, for example, has a higher than normal level of potassium and her blood pressure medication warns her not to eat bananas

I do eat plenty of bananas, great for keeping blood pressure in check, now to try a little more avocado and chard.
