2014 Parks and Recreation Summer Programs available in Newton, MA

Summer is just around the corner! So make sure you have your sunscreen bought, your bathing suit ready, and your summer program paperwork filled out. It must be submitted by May 15. Check out these summer camp options that the Newton Parks and Recreation Department and the Newton Public Schools have worked together for.

Acres in the Falls

acre in the fallsAcres in the Falls is a summer day camp for middle school students entering grades 5-8 in the fall of 2014. Weekly sessions are offered between June 30- August 1, 2014.

Campers participate in a variety of activities each day including sports, arts and crafts, inside games, gym and field games. Campers swim at Crystal Lake on Mondays and Wednesdays and participate in field trips or special events on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.

Camp Brunen Brook

camp brunen brookCamp Brunen Brook is a summer day camp for children entering grades K-6 in the fall of 2014. Weekly sessions are offered between June 30- August 15, 2014.

Campers pick from a selection of activities during each activity period. Separate activity choices for grades K-2 and 3-6 allow for appropriate age activities for each group. Daily activities include sports, arts and crafts, inside games, gym, playground, science and nature, music and drama, water play and more.

Camp Echo Bridge

camp echo bridgeCamp Echo Bridge offers an exciting inclusive summer program that focus on fun while bridging recreation and academics in the summertime. The camp is open to participants in elementary, middle, and high school (ages 6-21). The camp is broken down into ten classrooms/units based on age.

There are themed based-weeks, sports, games, arts and crafts, music, social club, math madness, language arts all stars, swimming at Crystal Lake, Wednesday special events, Friday field trips, theatre, a camp show, and an overnight week.

Camp Extreme

camp extremeThe Extreme Outdoor Adventure Program is now going by a new name: Camp Extreme. It is appropriate for children enrolled in grades 4-8 and participants must enroll for the whole week. The program offers a fun and exciting field trip each day.

Drop-off and pick-up are at The Lower Falls Community Center. Campers must bring their own lunch and plenty of water or drinks. If it rains the day of camp, they will have a back up plan.

Centre Acres

centre acresCentre Acres is a day camp for children grades 1-6. Each week offers a different theme and many of the activities revolve around the theme for each week. Some popular themes include: Carnival Week, Show Week, Olympic Week, and Entertainment Week.

Field trips are scheduled throughout the summer and parents will be notified prior to the trip. Recreational swim will be held at Crystal Lake and children should brink a bathing suit and towel daily.

Earth Spirit Camps

earth spirit campsEarth Spirit Eco-Adventures provides experiences in nature that reconnect people to the natural world. For the Canoe Explorers, participants will be introduced to basic paddling techniques, safety skills, rescues and more. You will use your canoes to explore the Charles River and learn about various ecological concepts. No experience is necessary and all canoeing equipment and instruction will be provided.

The week of July 21-25 is still available.

The Eco Explorers week aims to immerse participants in experiences that awaken their senses and deepen their connection to nature, other people, other beings and themselves. You will have the opportunity to discover Newton as well as the Breakheart Reservation.

Kid’s Korner

kid's kornerKid’s Korner is a developmental child experience where children can learn while they play. They will have the opportunity for social, emotional, physical and mental development in a nurturing environment. Activities are individual and age appropriate.

Some daily activities include sensory table, water play, dramatic play, and other various games. Daily water play will take place in a wading pool on sight.

Outdoor Adventure

outdoor adventureThe Outdoor Adventure Program at Nahanton Park will focus on outdoor activities an environmental awareness. In a “hands on” manner, participants will enjoy a mixture of learning, working and playing together while discovering how to enjoy nature’s gifts without harming them.

The Outdoor Adventure Program offers 2-6th graders a two week environmental awareness experience. Join them in spending time outdoors, discovering the natural world, making new friends, and laying fun games,

Puddlestompers

puddlestompersPuddlestompers offers children the opportunity to learn through hands-on investigation, active movement and play, crafts, stories and songs. Most of the program is spent outdoors in nature, though there are indoor facilities available. A snack is provided each day, as well as a take-home craft and handout with additional activities to extend learning and exploration into your home.

Puddlestompers will explore the beautiful parks set along the Charles River. You will be able to explore vernal pools hidden among white pine trees, flip over logs to find worms, bugs, and salamanders, and discover bird nests in grassy meadows.

Thundercat Sports Camps

thundercat sportsThundercat Sports is a local organization that makes learning sports skills fun. They use techniques to maximize learning and fun while keeping kids very active. Programs include flag football, soccer, and sports jam, which is a multi-sport program. In sports jam, basketball, baseball, and soccer are the core sports, but sports like flag football, floor hockey, volleyball, badminton, dodge ball, disc golf, ultimate Frisbee, whiffle ball, and kick ball are mixed in.

T-Ville Trails

t-ville trailsT-ville Trails Summer Program will be held at the Bowen School. There is plenty of space for outdoor fun, with playing fields and a playground, as well as indoor areas for indoor play, arts and crafts, and other inside activities.

Special events will occur every day and involve the entire camp. These may include carnivals, dress up days, animal shows, puppet shows, and other demonstrations, or activities based on the theme of the week.
