The April issue of Kiplinger's Magazine suggests ways to check to make sure you are not overpaying on your property taxes.

 (1)  Go to the assessor's office or Web site to verify the details of your home are correct.  Square footage, number of bedrooms, etc.  If there is an error, the assessor may fix it on the spot.  When information is transferred to the computer, a mechanical error could happen.

(2)  Compare at least five properties in your area with your same details, size, age, style, features.  If there is more than a 10% difference in tax assessment, you have a good case based on "uniformity".

(3)  Rules for appeals vary however, evidence is always helpful.  Photos and records can prove condition of your home with comparables in your neighborhood.

It is your home and your money - Be wise!  Take the steps and get informed!
