All across the country, communities are getting ready to hold Primary Elections. In some cases, early voting is going on right this minutes but in any case May 6 is your final opportunity to participate in the Primaries. Most people won't vote and what a shame that is. One of the activities keeping me the busiest (after the whole making a living thing) is supporting our good friend of almost 30 years for NC Senate District 50, Jane Hipps.
Sure, she's a good friend but that in and of itself is not enough to win an endorsement from us. However, being a force of nature and having the ability to create a cohesive coalition from concerned citizens in a matter of weeks...surely is a good reason to entrust some of our most precious possessions, our vote, time, money and public endorsement.
People like to complain and point fingers at the politicians (elected!) for either not doing their jobs or doing their jobs poorly. That may be true but in my opinion, every voter or non-voter needs to look themselves squarely in the mirror and point their finger at their own images and ask themselves "Did I participate fully in the process?". If the answer is yes, then by all means...critique away. If the answer is no, although the right is yours to not participate...shame on you anyway.
Corporate money (now unlimited) gets dumped in volumes on local races, many times the money doesn't even originate within the community. Primary races are often the target because the corporations know that the only thing that trumps huge money would be huge numbers of votes and people don't pay enough attention during Primaries and Mid-term elections. People, people, people...get off your couch and go vote! These elections are incredibly important.
Jane Hipps, NC Senate District 50 candidate has a Primary with an opponent who does not have an iota of the qualifications to make a difference in Raleigh. She also is far more qualified than the incumbent to fully represent the citizens of western North Carolina and to work towards a more harmonious working situation in Raleigh.
It is hard to believe that someone like Jane Hipps with her background of 38 years in public education - heavy concentration on the sciences (several Masters Degrees), a Masters Degree in Nursing (achieved AFTER retiring from public education), a Board Certified Pediatrics Nurse Practitioner, experienced business owner and a farmer would still be as warm hearted and genuine as she is. I am most excited that she is experienced in research and unlike many in Congress, will actually read and research the nuances of the proposed legislation and changes to legislation put before her at breakneck paces.
Participate in the process, the big money Corporate monsters aren't the only ones to blame for the shape we're in. Heck, we created them by not paying enough attention to who the voters were sending to "represent" us! Votes trump money, always have and always will. It is our only weapon in the fight for justice, get out there and wield it. And while you're doing that, NC Senate District 50 voters...cast your vote for Jane Hipps. We've got a lot of work to do!
