As A Grasshopper I Have Much To Learn And I Am Very Grateful For The Opportunity and Privilege of Being A Member of ActiveRain

Typically, I’m not one to ask for help.

It’s not because I don’t need it(far from reality) --- it’s just something I’ve never been totally comfortable doing or asking.

It’s a character flaw of which I am well aware.

Because of it, I never participated in Dick Greenberg’s Grasshopper/Sensei Challenge because of it.  And that’s a shame.  Until this year.

Roger MucciI was discussing this with Roger Mucci one day earlier this month and he asked me what I wanted to learn --- where should I begin?

Hmm, maybe I could become a master of nothing - after all, who knows more about nothing than Mr Mucci? Well, it appears he wasn’t giving up the secret to that formula easily. Damn!

I had previously mentioned to him about adding text to my photos on AR.   We chatted about it a bit and he obviously could sense I wasn’t quite getting it so he sent me step-by-step detailed directions.  I have definitely not mastered this skill and it’s not really share-worthy quite yet….but stay tuned….

Thanks, Roger I appreciate your generous spirit.

Not just Roger offered assistance but so did another very active member Noah Seidenberg from Evanston and Chicagoland.   We had been exchanging comments on each other posts for a while and a few encouraging emails from time to time but had never spoken by phone.

Noah SeidenbergI don’t know about you but picking up the phone and making a call(it’s what we do nearly everyday and throughout the day, right?) to another AR member has always been a bit difficult.   Busy?  Should I schedule an appointment to talk?  Yikes - Just get over it, you say.  I know.  I know.

Noah had some suggestions for SEO from his previous life in the world of computers.

We had a fun time chatting and Noah gave some great advice in a very organized matter relating to google +, facebook business pages(yes, Noah, I know) and twitter.   One trick he offered boosted my short URL hits immediately upon implementation.  And it’s so simple too.

Thanks, Noah, I appreciate the time and the follow-up.

Dick GreenbergAnd while I’m handing out Thank Yous -- I really must thank Dick Greenberg - Hi Dick - who I have also spoken to and enjoy his daily posts from market reports to puppy tales to the latest from Twisted Sifter(or other websites he shares).   This guy is the real deal.

So, Dick, thanks for sponsoring this contest and your role in making AR a place I want to visit everyday.

I feel very fortunate to have joined this site and only wish I would have been more active from the beginning rather than watching from the sidelines.  There are some really great people to find here.   And that’s a pretty incredible benefit I never knew would occur.

Michael, I am glad that you got over yourself.  So many people are willing and able to help others here.  And, I know that you, Noah, and Roger made some great connections.  As for Dick, WOW, what a guy!  He is the real deal, and he is an amazing human being!

Michael,

Wonderful post, and I understand the reluctance to ask for help.  I don't know Roger yet, but do enjoy Noah, and like you Dick is one of my favorites and the real deal...One of these days, we are going out there for a visit. A

Great post Michael and I agree about the calling and yet whenever I/we talk to another member it is always such a joy.  I have talked to a number of members and you are on my list one of these days as well.

Hi Erin -- yes, I was very fortunate both Roger and Noah reached out for this challenge.  Dick is one of a kind as far as I am concerned.    Thanks for your kind words about my teaching abilities - I also believe I learn so much more when I am explaining a concept to someone new by the questions they ask.   It really is or can be quite reciprocal, isn't it?

Belinda - okay, I'm up for that challenge by you -- this has been a crazy week so hopefully next week, check that caller ID of yours -- that call is longer overdue.

Ron - you aren't so bad yourself, either.

Alexandra and Ron - that will be awesome - I can only imagine the posts and the multitude of new ideas that would result from such a meeting.

Scott - I'm probably on lots of lists(shades of Edward Snowden, you know) -- most of them probably not as good as being on yours.

Well thanks for the excellent shout out my friend, you are most kind.  The little sensei/grasshopper thing was truly all my pleasure.  It isn't often that I can actually teach someone something that I consider to be a "techie" kind of thing, since I am not the least bit a "techie".  Truth be known, I forgot I knew how to add text to a photo, I just never do it, so it was a great refresher course for me.

Noah rocks!  We spoke during the last challenge where we had to call four ActiveRain members......which is when you and I spoke and I also spoke to Dick Greenberg.  Now there's the guy that deserves all the praise and thanks.  He certainly is the "real deal" and this challenges has such a wonderful way of bringing folks together.

So, when do we get to see some text in one of your photos?

Wow what a friend, our Michael Jacobs is so admired that he got a double whammy of the Noazark "5 easy lessons or one hard one sessions" and also the fantastic (with a twist) super blogger Roger.

Michael, it was a pleasure speaking with you finally and hope to do so again soon.

So now I understand what all the fuss is about!! Your thank you's to your sensei's helped me understand this challenge a lot better.  While I have not yet participated, your success is definitely encouraging Michael-especially since I have many of the same excuses.

Good morning Michael,

What a wonderful post..suggested for sure.  You made contact with some wonderful AR members and showed us how to get the most form a Sensei!! My April has been over the top and I did not have time to participate in this challenge but tried to rad a few that were going on and found them all to be so amazing! Thanks for sharing yours!!

Good morning, Dorie - thank you for your very nice comment and the suggest as well. Times are busy and productive - and I'm very grateful for that as well.  You're right there are some pretty amazing people out there in the world of AR Beyond the three mentioned.   What an added benefit to know them - and you would be definitely included.

Good Morning Michael, from not participating in previous years to two contacts? Not because I'm shy or don't like to talk to people but I hesitate making calls to AR friends as well..don't ask me why as I haven't figured it out myself yet. Just knowing we could reach out anytime to our friends is very comforting.

Hi Beth - I didn't expect one let alone two AR members to reach out and talk about the possibilities for the challenge.  If it's offered again next year, I'd recommend becoming a part of it - in fact, we can do it anytime of the year if you think about it.

Funny thing is in reading posts and comments this evening, I have come to an even different level of appreciation and learning from being a member of AR. I have printed and will reread some of the information which connected with me and in which I know I need help. Thank you, everyone. How fortunate to have an entity as ActiveRain. We are blessed. I hope in the future I will be able to contribute and repay.

Hi Jane - what a great comment.  I love it!  Your comment makes me think that we all(okay, I - ME!)need/needs to step back and realize everything that's right about the community(even beyond AR) and our roles in it.

Lisa - three of the greatest - I am privileged to have gotten to meet each on AR - even if it's only virtually(so far).

Kristin - a very good experience indeed!
