Credit Repair Scams...Good & Bad Credit

By
Mortgage and Lending with Brian Brass - Guaranteed Rate

We have all seen advertisements in newspapers, on TV, and on the Internet.  You hear them on the radio, get fliers in the mail and you may even get calls from telemarketers offering credit repair services. They all make similar claims:

  • "Repair your Credit...No problem!"
  • "Erase your bad credit -- 100% guaranteed."
  • "Create a new credit identity"
  • "Remove bankruptcies, liens, and bad loans forever!"

    Do yourself a favor and save some time and money. Don't believe these pie-in-the sky statements. Only time,personal debt repayment and the deletion of inaccurate items will improve your credit report.

    Deleting damaging credit or adding positive items is simply the process of disputing the inaccurate information in your credit file.

    However, removing inaccurate or improving damaged credit can be very time consuming and frustrating.  So when most people learn it takes personal effort and persistence in dealing with the credit agencies and creditors they give up.  But why, your individual credit rating is one of your most important personal possessions.  It's the most important factor in obtaining new financing and the interest rates you receive on new and existing credit accounts.

    Don't despair a credit remediation specialist can recognize what items you should address to increase your credit-worthiness at no-cost.  Often this includes identifying "good" credit that is not reporting correctly.

Avoid the pitfalls of greater damage by disputing, paying or closing the wrong accounts or paying a 3rd-Party for "instant repair".

Scams - Removing Bad Credit
Credit repair companies reach out to consumers with poor credit histories everyday. They promise to clean up your credit report so you can qualify for a car loan or a home mortgage. The truth is, many don't deliver on the promise of instant credit repair. Most times they will do nothing to improve your credit report and often decrease your scores in the short term.  Why waste hundreds or thousands of dollars in up-front fees,

Warning Signs
Beware of credit repair companies that:

  • Require large fees upfront - prior to the service being provided;
  • Fail to inform you that you can do yourself for free;
  • Tell you not to contact a credit bureau directly;
  • Ask you to apply for an Employer Identification Number or Tax ID  instead of your Social Security Number to obtain a new start;
  • Tell you they will dispute all the information in your credit report.

While it may seem extreme to some, creating a "new" credit profile may be appealing to those with little hope.  Understand that you may be subject to prosecution if you provide false information or obtain an Employer Identification Number from the Internal Revenue Service under false pretenses.

The Answer
No one can legally remove accurate and timely negative information from a credit report.  You can, however, dispute inaccurate information without any cost.  The Fair Credit Reporting Act states:

You can dispute mistakes or outdated items for free. Ask the credit reporting agency for a dispute form or submit your dispute in writing, along with any supporting documentation.

Before you begin disputing items on your credit you may wish to consult a remediation specialist who will advise you on how to repair your own credit.  They will advise you on what you should and should not dispute.

Many people actually decrease their credit scores by disputing the wrong accounts, paying off old collections and closing open accounts.
Make sure you understand the timeline you are working with to complete your credit repair.

Most credit repair companies focus on deleting bad credit and don't realize that a great percentage of credit reports include inaccuracies regarding the positive or good credit.  So other quick fix companies offer ways to add good credit to a credit profile almost instantly.

More Credit Scams - Adding Instant Good Credit

There several companies who will add seasoned "authorized user" trade lines to somebody's credit profile for large fees.  Yes you heard that correctly an individual with little or poor credit can BUY positive trade lines.  Visit the following providers for more details:

Raise Credit Score Now
Seasoned Trades
Instant Credit Builders

The fees for these trade line packages range from $1000 to $4000 depending on the number of trade lines, the credit limit and seasoning.  This practice, though "legal", is highly controversial to say the least as its impact unfairly influences (raises) the credit score.  It rewards buyers for positive credit experiences that the prospect did not actually participate in.  Lenders and CRA'S have adopted policies to minimize the effects of this type of activity.  Lenders may choose to ignore the accounts completely.  This would obviously be devastating to someone who spent $4000 to "buy" credit in an effort to obtain financing.

So if you wish to improve your credit score or assist someone who might benefit from legitimate credit repair efforts avoid the quick fix repair scams and consult a remediation specialist.  They can advise you on what to do yourself or recommend a legitimate credit repair firm that will save you both time and money in the long run.

Another thing that people without good credit or no credit at all  can do is to go to www.prbc.gov. They can create a credit profile that way with bills that doesn't show up on your credit report such as telephone bill,cell phone bill and other bills.

I had no idea that paying off old collections could lower the score.  Thank you so much for the information.  I want to one day refinance my home but I know that I need a higher score so that I can get a better rate.

I do not know for sure, what credit companies promise their clients and what these companies are. But many years ago I applied for bad credit card (http://www.acclaimsecuredcards.com/Bad-Credit-Cards-1246603-page.php) (I had really bad credit) to one of the major bank. And it really helped me. It reported to three major bureaus each month. It is important fact. I made payments in full and on time and did not have any negatives in my credit report. You see, now I have better credit card and hope to get the best one in the future. Everything depends only on you. You need to prove your credit worthiness.

Before someone just pays off an old collection they should make sure that it has not gone beyond the statute of limitations.  almost all  states have a statute of limitations on credit card debt

some like California is 3 years.   If you have a credit card debt older than 3 years it has past the SOL and a collection agency no longer has the right to collect it.  In that event the best way to fix your report is to challenge the colletion and get it deleted.

Brian, this is a great post.  It's amazing how many "fix your credit quick" schemes there are.  Some of the more aggressive credit repair techniques, like "authorized user" accounts are being dealt with in the new FICO credit score algorithms, but that won't stop some of the unscrupulous credit repair companies from continuing to promise consumers that they can benefit from the techniques.

Ricky Bowers wrote on 11/12/08: "My Score went from 520 to Over 745 on all 3 bureaus in about 20 Days."

My question:  If you were a credit grantor and saw that this applicant had been working with this kind of company, would you be more or less inclined to lend him money? And, how can a trade line or mortgage that only has a 30 day (or less) history make much difference in your credit score? If your credit score went to 745 that quickly, there has to be more to it than just adding a new trade line or mortgage. I would like to know more about just what this company did to generate this number.

Everyone sometimes need credit repair like me. You know what? It greatly helps me because I’ve spent the majority of my adult life trying to keep up with the Joneses. As an American, there is an undeniable pressure to live the “American Dream”. I just think it’s ironic that the American Dream has become almost identical for everyone—big houses, fancy cars, a white picket fence, and expensive things. It’s pretty evident that all of these luxuries and material goods aren’t making Americans happy. Instead of happiness, I feel guilt and stress when I make purchases at the store. I feel guilty for buying something I know I don’t really need, and I feel stress because I know my credit card bill is going to be huge. I, like many Americans, need to reevaluate what really makes us happy. Focusing on material goods isn’t making me happy. All these things that I have are just weighing me down emotionally and financially. The simple things in life make me happy—like spending time with my kids, getting outdoors, and talking with my husband. The best part is none of those things cost money. So why then are Americans so consumed with spending money on worthless things? Americans are addicted to shopping and spending to impress each other. I’m sure my designer clothing impresses a few people, but if they knew how much credit card debt it took to dress like this, they wouldn’t find it as impressive. Keeping up with the Joneses is overrated, and I’ve paid a heavy price to try to live the “American Dream”. I’m going to start living my own dream—the real American dream. I’m going to start managing my money, saving my money, and paying off my debts. My credit score is also extremely low, so I’m going to get credit repair help. With less debt and credit repair I can focus on the things in my life that truly make me happy—my family. Brian,

I recently jointed United Credit Education Services which is a credit union service organization that offers a legal credit repair program. I agree with everything in your blog, but realistically most people do not have the time that it takes to repair their own credit, so I was happy to find a program such as this one for my clients. The company does a great job and is also members of the Better Business Bureau. I am happy that I joined.

If anyone is interested in the company or if you just want to get some of the free credit and financial education materials to pass along to your clients please feel free to contact me or visit my website. I will be happy to send anybody any of the PDF's and Powerpoints, etc. that I have.

"The only guaranteed method to repair your credit is to pay off the old bills and get your derogatory balances to $0."

This is a false statement in many regards so I'll just list why it's wrong.

  1. There is no guaranteed method of credit repair.
  2. By paying off older derogatory items you will renew the "date of last" activity and destroy the score.
  3. It isn't a derogatory balance ... it's revolving balance and it constitutes 30% of your credit score. As long as your cards are within 20-30% of the total avilable limit you will be just fine.

With credit repair it all comes down to whether or not the negative items are meeting the requirements outlined within the Fair Credit Reporting Act for them to be continuously reported.  If they aren't or they aren't verified within a reasonable amount of time, then by law they have to be deleted.

When researching potential credit repair companies either for yourself or to refer your clients to please look into whether or not they are a member of the National Association of Credit Services Organizations http://www.nacso.org

NACSO goes above and beyond what the Credit Repair Organizations Act requires and it members are the upper echelon of the credit repair industry.

Paying of old debts which have come close to Statute of Limitation is the wrong thing. Since it makes your old debt current and payable and this in turn actually reduces your credit score.

Many potential home buyers are only 3 to 6 months away from repairing their credit and qualifying for a home. However, time isn't the only factor. They must follow the advice of professionals to accelerate their credit repair and to avoid making simple mistakes that can cause big credit score setbacks.
