I'm not a pro, but I get questions all the time about optimizing our real estate websites for SEO.

Recently, I came across a SEO (Search Engine Optimization) Quiz and thought I would share it with the community.  This might benefit a few real estate agents doing their own SEO for their website, or, if you do professional SEO, you can see how well you score.

Here is the first question taken from the quiz on the website seomoz.org.

Which of the following is the least important area in which to include your keyword(s)?

  • Meta Keywords
  • Internal Anchor Text
  • Meta Description
  • Body Text
  • Title

The Answer is at the bottom of this post.

Take the Quiz!

SEO Quiz

If you take the quiz, let me know what you thought about it and how you did.

Rick

P.S.  If you're wondering how I did, I finished at 72% (54 out of 75).

Answer: Meta Keywords

It is, indeed, like learning a whole new language. Thanks for sharing! I've been visiting SEOmoz trying to figure out what I am doing with my other blog. Slowly, I'm getting there with the help of everyone here!!

Thanks very much for the tip on seomoz.  I just signed up for an account.  I am not going to bother taking the quiz until I learn a bit more out of the fear that my Internet privileges might be revoked for failing.

yes SEO has a huge learning curve to start with but once you get the hang of it, you gain excellent exposure.

Just when you think you've got a handle on it all, something like a little SEO quiz blows you out of the water.  Bacl to school I go.

It's an entertaining quiz, and please realize that it was done mostly for the link juice/publicity that comes with it. On that point, it's a huge success. If people learn from it, all the better.

Having been doing this work for ten years, I think that many of the questions are irrelevant to the average site owner, and even to SEO pros. I'd argue with some of the answers, as well. Some of it is just opinion, presented as fact, in the form of a quiz.

SEO, for the most part, is not rocket science. Not even close. Especially local real estate SEO. Agents can get their house in order and do well, without a need to understand the "finer points" of SEO. I see that kind of basic success all the time. Don't over-complicate SEO is my best advice.

Here's a multi-page document that was specifically written for real estate professionals, using real estate examples:
Search Engine Optimization Basics For Real Estate-Related Websites
http://www.domaindrivers.com/seobasics-realestate-main.htm

I hope it helps.

Also, you can create your own optimized pages easily with our new landing page tool, here:
http://www.domaindrivers.com/pagegumbo/pagegumbo-test.asp
http://www.domaindrivers.com/pagegumbo/pagegumbo.asp

The first link is an "example" page, and the second is a live tool that you can use at anytime. The tool forces agents to put more of the secondary real-estate related keywords on their pages.

Just my own two cents.

OOCH!  There is a lot more to all of this than I ever expected.  I'm going to pass along the url for the quiz to my SEO person.  I tried taking it and didn't even understand some of the questions let alone the right answer!
