Okay, I'll be the first to admit it. I'm a TwitterBug. Yeah, that's right. A Net Twit. Or is that Nitwit? (Don't answer that!)

Oh well, regardless, I am hooked on Twitter. Slightly obsessed even. But certainly not as addicted as some (you KNOW who you are!)

I'm putting the proverbial 'Cart-before-the-Horse' here because I'm planning a full review/critique on Twitter in the very near future. But because I know a large number of our members are 'twittering,' I thought I'd share this now....

Techno-Geek/Blogger Extraordinaire, Robert Scoble, has come to a new, revised conclusion regarding Twitter in one of his recent posts.

Basically, he states that it is far better to follow, then to be followed (On Twitter, you have members that you are 'Following' and then people who are 'Followers' of you).

For us Type "A" personalities, it's typically in our nature to take charge, to be the Leaders in a group dynamic, and develop a 'following.' We also tend to dominate the discussion, and speak more than we listen.

But as effective real estate professionals, we have learned the art/value of 'listening' to our clients, rather than dominating the conversation. When we listen, we learn.

Here's the nutshell of what the Scoblizer had to say:

"I've gone through stages with Twitter. At some point I thought it was important to get lots of followers. But lately I've been telling people that the secret to Twitter isn't how many followers you have, but how many people you are following. Here's why:

1. Getting followed just means you're popular. Yes, that's cool, but it hardly will make you interesting. Paris Hilton will have more Twitter members than I will, when she joins.
2. Getting followed a lot might mean you're using it for a publishing system. If all you have is followers what makes that different from owning a newspaper, a radio station, a TV station, or, even, a Web site? Hint: nothing.
3. If you're just trying to get followed you're probably just needing attention or you might be Jason Calacanis.

But what does following a lot of people say?

1. You're trying to learn more.
2. You're trying to meet more people.
3. You're trying to be a better listener.
4. You're communicating to the world that you'd like to be listened to (golden rule: treat people how you'd like to be treated).
5. You're trying to find out about more stuff. More events. More stories.

Now, who would you rather hang out with? A person who only talks and doesn't listen? Or a person who listens to as many people as he can? I know I'd rather hang out with someone who listens to more people."

If you haven't taken the time to put Twitter through the paces, I would strongly recommend it. Look for my detailed analysis/review on Twitter in the coming days ahead.

Nitwit Rich - I joined and tryed it out but I must say I have no clue on what that place is about.  Perhaps I am doing it all wrong or haven't given it a proper chance, but I'm not a fan at all.  I don't think that is a bad thing though, Lord knows I have enough addictions.....

@activerich...........yea I love it and it is addicting. The thing I enjoy is how quickly you can get to know people in a dialog instead of commenting on a blog and hours later getting a response  back.

I love the links that people post and have been to some interesting sites from the links.

But, I big bonus for me, is I actually talk to you and Bob and Paul Chaney!!! Who would have thought.

Hi Rich, I was invited to this site some ago and I didn't check it out. My mistake. I know that there are some twitters on here because I hear them mentioning it. Judging from the wonderful people that have already commented, Missy, Sally, Mana, Courtney, Jason, Midori, I feel like I must have missed out. I will get over there , and see is I can become a "Twitterer" too. Thanks for giving all the great reasons to be a follower.  I am a A W P person. Type A Personality with Panache, lol. Should I do both? Follow and be Followed. I promise I will lead those that follow me only to good and wonderful places. :-)

Rich,

At the risk of being accused of profiling, you look like you'd be a 'twitterer'!!! :^) Thanks,   Fran

P.S. I like the 'subliminal' message in this post!!!

Rich ~ I am on Twitter but it doesn't interest me as much as AR.  There's only so much time I can spend on the Internet.

Rich, I haven't checked into Twitter yet because it scares me.  Why?
1.  The addiction factor -- I've already got one.
2.  I don't like being followed.
3.  I don't like people to know where I am.  I don't even bloglog.

Is following the same as lurking?

Rich... So, umm,.. what am I missing here? Twitter is utterly boring and more boring to me. I suppose I could post every thought in my head, but I wouldn't want to frighten the tweets!

p.s. Ditto my Elaine

Hi Jason-

I don't think I'm ready to Twitter.  The thought of being any more "connected" is too daunting.  However, I like your conclusion.  It reminds me of an old line - The person who does all the talking, will only ever know as much as he (she) already knows.

I am on twitter, but only every now and then.  I don't know how everyone can be on it as much as they are!  How do you all do that?  I definitely need a tutorial.....

@activerich IMHO Twitter does not work as well now to find people to follow with the search.  My suggestion is to use people who you follow to find people to follow.  I have been on longer than Teri Lussier but when Teri started following people I met people reading her Tweets and started following them because she was following them.  Of course a lot of it is real estate people following and chatting with the same people that they associate with on ActiveRain, Facebook etc.

For me the opportunity to follow social media people is invaluable.  But the biggest value to me is following local Twitterers.  There I find local people to follow through the local people that I am following.

I had a real hard time getting comfortable with Twitter.  I don't post that much. I don't have it on my phone. I do follow more people than I am followed by, but there are a lot of vendors who are following me that I am not going to follow....

I follow Scoble on Twitter (and had read his blog via Google Reader for a long time.)  I had read his Tweet and gone to his blog when he wrote this... he was recently and has long been in a competition with Jason Calacanis for who has the most followerers.
