There has been much discussion on social media following a segment on ABC's 20/20 news program about real estate agents holding open houses and stealing prescription meds, and also jewelry. The worst getting "caught" part was two agents at a vacant house for sale using it as their "private motel" for sexual rendezvous in the middle of the day over WEEKS.
So WHO?
do you trust to sell your home?
These characters on TV are bozos and lunatics, but how do you know that TOP PRODUCER is not one of them?
I would say UNLESS you PERSONALLY know them through the years, you need to go BEYOND referrals and check a handful of REFERENCES that the past clients had a good experience. The Seller in the ABC NEWS piece was simply stunned that the "reputable" Coldwell Banker sales guy had the arrogance to use his home as his flea bag mattress away from home with the mistress who ALSO was in real estate. They even made up the bed after each incident and were only caught because some motion detectors somewhere alerted the local police to a possible burglary. The worst part was the agents moved on to other firms and didn't even have their licenses revoked. We have a Code of Ethics, but someone has to enforce it.
There are SO MANY REALTORS and others in the housing industry who have high integrity, great reputations, and behave properly, I do think the public understands that there are a few bad apples out there that make for a titillating story. Welcome giving references should customers ask you. You have nothing to hide if YOU ARE GREAT!! It is a shame these unethical people are among us, and all we can do is root them out when they are exposed!!
