Sellers Resort to Weird Deals

I recently read and article on what sellers are doing to get their homes sold. I know here in Central Florida we have in excess of a 34 month supply of resale homes, these numbers do not take into consideration new construction. So what have these frustrated home sellers resorted to doing? Home sellers are trying an array of techniques to sell their slow-moving homes.

Bob and Ricki Husick sold their suburban Pittsburgh home by offering to give back the buyer's purchase price upon their death. The Husicks also offered to throw in the couple's retirement home in Arizona if the buyers would agree to care for the Husicks in their old age.

In Colorado, J.J. Rodgers has launched an essay contest. So far, she has received more than 500 essays - accompanied by a $100 entry fee - explaining why the writer should win her four-bedroom home. Rodgers hopes to get a total of 2,000 entries or $200,000 in fees.

Here in Orlando a builder is raffling off his million dollar home. He is selling tickets for $100 and at the end of the raffle one luckily ticket holder will walk away with a new home.

Daniel Lasnick, a real-estate attorney in Stamford, Conn., recommends discussing deals involving quirky incentives with a real-estate lawyer. Depending on the incentive, a side agreement may be needed. Some people think the weird incentives are unlikely to have much impact. "People are offering all kinds of goofy things to get their houses sold, but what gets a house sold really is going to be based on price and price alone."

The lady in Colorado is pretty smart unless she runs short on essays...I would never have thought about it but even for $100 entry - well, thats not bad odds!!!

Great topic and blog!!!

This almost seems fishy.I wonder what a real estate attorney would say about this plan.

Sometimes the challenge is getting your home noticed when there are so many for sale.  I had a suggestion for an agent in a neighborhood where every 3rd home was for sale in a midwest city.  I suggested he park the owners Harley Davidson on the front lawn with a sale sign that states $250,000 and we will throw in the house for free.  I am sure people will notice his home.

If these ideas don't help, don't know what might.  We haven't had any very creative ideas like this in Northern California yet !

Hey I like the essay contest, we get letters telling sellers why they should sell cheap to them all the time. But adding an entry fee is a new twist.

I like the raffle and the essay contest.  I wonder if there is any sort of state regulation regarding these type of gimmicks.

Those were some creative ideas for sure! I've heard of the raffle idea, but don't of any that have worked, recently. That would be interesting to find out. Good post.
