I am thinking of doing some remodeling in my house. It occurred to me that about every decade or so a new "fad" comes into play,
- 50's Black and White Checked Floors
- 60's Vinyl Floor Tiles
- 70's Shag Carpet, Paneling, and Popcorn
- 80's Wallpaper
- 90's Ceramic Tile
- 2000's Granite and textured walls
So my thinking is, I think the granite may be coming to an end, although it is pretty indestructible. If I am going to remodel my house, I don't want it to need "updating" by the time I finish it.
What will the new fad be? Who was the first person that decided to put granite on their counter-tops? Who will be the first person to start the new idea? What qualifications must this new idea have to in order to be considered?
One of the very important things will be the cost. If it is too cheap then everyone can have it thus nullifying its importance. If it is too expensive, not enough people will be able to afford it and that will also nullify its importance. It has to be high end but not too high end. Just right. Maybe at the 70% marker.
It must also be appealing to the eye. This can sometimes be an issue because, as a whole, we don't like change. Therefore, it may have to have a "teaser affect" in order to get it started. Think of subtle wallpaper, for instance. Or it must be off the wall bold. Think of the black and white checked floors.
I saw some red and black ones the other day.

So what can be new? A new idea that catches on? How about:
Elemental silicon also has a large impact on the modern world economy. Although most free silicon is used in the steel refining,aluminium-casting, and fine chemical industries (often to make fumed silica), the relatively small portion of very highly purified silicon that is used in semiconductor electronics ( the basis of most computers, a great deal of modern technology depends on it. Seems special to me.
- The steel used to make cars?
- Silicon that circuits and transistors are made of in computers?
- What about stained glass like in church?
Those are just a couple of my ideas.
I am thinking the steel in cars because then you could paint it really cool colors. I like the changing color ones. If you stand on one side of the kitchen it is one color and if you move to the other side it is a different color. I have heard that these paint jobs are pretty expensive.
I chose Silicon because I thought there would be plenty around as fast as we go through computers but still has a "special-ness" to it. Wikipedia says:
My last choice is stained glass. I think you can coat it with something so it will be tough. There are so many choices, too. You can go the religious route.
Or you could go with something a little bolder. I am thinking that my project might have to wait. I just can't decide.
I guess I'll keep my Formica and shag.
