There is so much local Civil War history in Lynchburg, Virginia but for the history buff, a trip to Appomattox County, Virginia is a must. Appomattox is located approximately 18 miles east of Lynchburg and holds a significant place in American history. It was here that the Civil War came to an end in April, 1865. Appomattox is a small city in a largely rural county.

Consider a drive to Appomattox during the week of April 6-15, 2008. It was here on April 9, 1895 that our nation was reunited after the Civil War. The Appomattox Court House National Historical Park will be celebrating the 143^nd anniversary of the surrender. There is a schedule of events posted at www.nps.gov/apco.

I highly recommend this National Park, a favorite of local schools for field trips. Learn about the historic surrender that took place here. Several Civil War re-enactments take place during the year. For more information call (434)352-2621.

Appomattox Antique Store

While in Appomattox, you might want to explore downtown. There are galleries, antique stores and a visit to the Appomattox Tea Room would be a nice stop in the afternoon. Check out these websites http://www.appomattox.com/ and http://www.appomattox.org/ http://www.appomattoxchamber.org/

The Appomattox Tourism Website sponsored by the city and county. The site feature historical attractions, restaurants, hotels and lodging. There will be links to various lodging websites where reservations may be made. You can download official tourism brochures, customize a printable itinerary, see video and access the official events calendar. Souvenirs may be purchased through an online gift shop.

Hi, Debbie! I have been to Appomattox and it is both beautiful and rich in history. It is indeed a national treasure! Thanks for sharing this with us.

This is truly a historic place. The surrender of General Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia to Grant and his Army of the Potomac saw the end of the bloodiest conflict in American history. These notes that were passed between the opposing generals are captured HERE! You are fortunate to have a vital piece of America's history so close. Being in Atlanta, we have many historical places from the same time frame and from before and after.

Bo, Lynchburg's only an hour away by plane! This is a neat town, so much history. It's absolutely packed during the Railroad Festival.

That'd be a great trip. My wife flies in from DC tomorrow, coming back from a long weekend trip with one of her friends...They played in the Smithsonian since Friday, and she had a blast! I'd love to explore Historic Virginia, as I've been around a few areas (Mt Vernon, Monticello, Shenandoah and Alexandria to name a few), and we're travel hounds, so that would be a beautiful early Autumn experience!

Danny, it is; it's a beautiful building that's been restored and is now the visitor center.There is a store inside as well.

Bo, she must have had a great time. Did she get to see the Cherry Blossoms? I love to travel too, but it seems we only go to the local sites when out of state visitors come.

Yes, she was there for the Cherry Blossom Festival. There was also a huge kite flying event on the lawn in front of the Washington Monument as well, that she said was spectacular. We have begun formulating plans to go back that way, either in the Fall, or next Spring. We've already got a trip planned to Minnesota by way of St. Louis this Summer, or I'm sure we'd look at coming up that way sooner.

Awesome Bo, she was in DC at the right time! I want to go back to the Smithsonian and I've never been to the Holocaust Museum so that's high on our list. Once the girls get settled for the summer we will have time to travel a bit more. St Louis is a great city, do you have family in Minnesota? We were there briefly on our way to South Dakota and then on to Yellowstone.

No family. I helped a friend drive through in December in a race to beat snowstorms pushing through the mid-west. He relocated, and had to drive due to pets. We drove straight through, making it in about 20 hours. Hit snow ~100 miles south of Chicago,but couldn't stop, or we'd have been jammed up for several days. Spent 1 night in Minneapolis, and flew back the following morning. I only got to go to the Mall of America during the short time I was there, and wanted to go back to canoe the rivers in the summer.

Yellowstone/Grand Tetons are great, too. We did a 6,000 mile driving tour up from GA, through Colorado, up to Wyoming, back across South Dakota and into Chicago before heading home. Cool 3 week trip in '99.

Bo, We've driven cross country several times, but the trip in '98 was the upper states. I can't imagine crossing the plains with snow, that must have been a tough trip. I'm sure the summer will be a better time for outdoor activities!

We loved the Tetons, went to Silverton.Durango, Ouray in Colorado. Even drove our Minnie Winnie motorhome UP Pike's Peak, how nutty!LOL! It was a scary ride back down that mountain!

Duane, I'm so glad to see they restored the one in Appomattox and repurposed it for the Visitor Center. There's another one in Pamplin that's been renovated and is now used as the town library. Thanks for commenting!

Hey Debbie, Pike's Peak is a scary endeavor, even for a car. Couldn't imagine in an RV...Snowed on us on top of Pike's Peak on July 4, 1997.... Did you guys go to Royal Gorge?

YES! Bo, Oh my gosh was I glad they wouldn't let us cross it in the RV! I was so nervous looking over into the gorge.
