There aren't enough hours in the day...
People have been saying that phrase forever…in different languages, of course, all throughout the centuries. But, we have also been proving it wrong. Everyday we wake up and live another day. Thank God for the sun and the moon, the night and the day, that force us to rest and to pace our lives. Our problem isn't lack of time, but lack of time management. For example the county of Guinea Bissau in west Africa is known to have one of the largest natural resources of Cashews in the world, but due to lack of management of the country many of the cashews fall to the ground and rot every year benefiting no one. Is there a cashew lack or a lack of good management?
How often are we taking control of our day and not letting it take control of us? How often are we becoming slaves to our Smart Phones, Computers, Texts, Emails, and Social Media sites? I know that I am often very guilty of being a follower when it comes to these things and not the leader. They say that each time you get distracted by one of these above mentioned times or others like them it takes up to 10 minutes to get re-focused on the task at hand. Talk about a lot of wasted time getting re-focused each day!
Many say that about themselves, "I'm a good multi-tasker" insinuating that the above distractions are not distractions at all, but tasks they handle simultaneously. The fact is that I have never heard of a successful entrepreneur or leader attribute their success to "multi-tasking". It is quite the contrary, many credit their success to disciplining themselves in the area of managing and creating goals and more importantly executing those goals via time management skills.
My father always carried around a yellow stationary pad with numbers 1-10 written on it. He wouldn't write more than 10 items on his to do list at a time. He would say if it isn't important enough to make it on the top 10 then you shouldn't be doing it.
So each day as we get up we need to create a plan or else by failing to do so we plan to fail.
Here are some good tips to help:
1. Make a to do list each day. Make it clean and neat with only 10 items or fewer. Focus on only one item at a time.
2. Look back on your day and review whether or not you stayed on task. What things did you spend time on that were not beneficial or productive?
3. Spend the time in your day with a comprehensive schedule or else your time will spend you guaranteed!
4. Do the most important task at every moment. If it isn't the most important why are you doing it?
