It Is Official! Internet Addiction Is A Real Mental Disorder!

If you send a lot of text messages and lots of emails you may just be diagnosed with Internet Addiction. If you are on the Internet a lot you just may be diagnosed with the Internet Addiction. This is true stuff!

Internet Addiction

Of course, those of us here on Active Rain know all about the addiction to the Internet. So I guess we will be prime candidates for the new drugs that some company will invent to help us deal with our Internet addiction!

The American Journal of Psychiatry just printed an article that there is such a thing as Internet Addiction. A psychiatrist by the name of Jerald Block said that there are symptoms to this addiction.

The symptoms include needing to buy more and better devices and equipment and experiencing withdrawal symptoms when they are away from the Internet. Ya think?

Active Rain Addictions

Oh, but the best part is that he says that 86% of all those people who are addicted to the Internet suffer from other mental illnesses! So I guess that means we are all a bunch of loony tunes here typing away in the Rain! Well, I guess if you enjoy the rain as much as we do, they will come up with a name for that too. After all, only the mentally ill enjoy playing in the Rain! ( I think they might be the normal ones, actually!)

Dr. Block wants to place Internet Addiction in the new edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, which comes out in 2012. Of course, when that happens the insurance companies will then reimburse you for your visits to the weekly couch to deal with your addiction and you will walk away with a prescription drug to help you relieve the pain of staying out of the Rain!

British Psychiatrists say that about 5 to 10% of all Internet users are addicted to the Internet with most of those being men who are highly educated and introverted and middle aged women with home computers.

Choose your addictions wisely!
I say Chocolate and Active Rain are approved addictions and don't need to be medicated!!!!

KATERINA - Internet addiction seems like something that many people have, but I think that much of it stems from the fact that we are so reliant on e-mail and being online in today's society.  I know that I feel totally lost when my Internet is down, or even just e-mail for that matter.  The Internet has become woven into our everyday lives, so it's natural to miss it when it's not available.  However, I can also see that a lot of unproductive time can be spent online as well.

Well I know I definitely qualify! Sign me up for the AR Treatment Center, intervention, whatever.. I don't care... and I'm not giving up AR, chocolate, or shoes! hehe

It's almost 4:30 am here in So. California and I can't tear myself away!  Yes, I'm excited and overwhelmed at all the available information, etc., but I'm definitely an AR addict, and lovin every minute of it!  Good night.. good morning and good luck everyone...

P.S.  You know you're addicted when you're so tired you don't even realize you logged out and commented and had to get back on to comment again... Boy, I am in trouble!

Katerina, I LOVE this take on addictions! I think an addiction is more about not having the control to stop or the "vice" controlling me. I am in charge - even on AR. That said, I don't like missing out on all of the fun and the great possibilities and the great people here!!! Good job Katerina!! ;-)

I haven't read the comments yet, but I would say Chocolate has to be the medication for this, wouldn't you?  Also, when we lay on the shrinks couch, we need to make sure we can see his laptop screen to make sure he is making notes about us and not surfing the web.  LOL

Active Rain is definitely addicting!  But as my husband sits around watching every sport that exists on TV, I view this as a productive addiction.  Hey, it could be worse,  I don't smoke (anything), rarely drink (I am a really cheap drunk and don't tolerate alcohol well, don't do illicit drugs, and don't cheat on my husband.  So what is a handful of chocolate and some AR??

Carol- Same here. I don't drink, smoke, don't do any drugs- illegal or legal, don't drink coffee, no caffeine, no casein and eat only the flesh of fish.

SO yeah, a handful of chocolate and AR! Not a bad thing at all! Making money doing your addiction, well, that is a good thing!
