So many of us out there try our best to make our homes inviting. We spend hours trying to find the right sofa, the right appliances, and the right fixtures and so on. We get lost in making sure that our living space feels good. And this of course is a good thing! It's a great feeling when you walk into your home and feel the warmth and character. But how much effort do we really put into our front door and entry way? Sure we take care of the lawn, plant annuals and perennials and make sure we have the right trees for shade. It seems that all too often we tend to neglect the front door and the impact that a first impression can make.
Some front doorways seem to do a disappearing act. Can you remember the front door of a home you just visited? Chances are if you do they used a color that made it pop! Was it surrounded by beautiful potted plants? Or how about wind chimes? Did you see a welcome mat or welcome stone?

• Add some potted plants. Use a variety of colors, textures, shapes and fragrances
• Put down a welcome mat or a welcome plaque
• Hang a wind chime
• Add solar lighting leading to the front door
• Place a spotlight in front of a tree closest to your doorway
• If you have a porch area place a comfortable wicker chair (or other outdoor material) and a small table
• Make sure the house numbers are visible and decorative
• Repair or replace any unsightly cracks in the pavement or cement
• Remember to remove door hanging advertisements, old newspapers, leaves and debris to that your front entry always keeps a fresh appearance
By utilizing many of the above suggestions, you tap into all of your senses--especially your sense of smell which heightens your other senses.
