My termite guy, Jim Harrington from Harrintgton's Pest Control, does most of my woood destroying insect inspections when I do a home inspection. He's been in business for over 32 years, and he is essential when it comes to finding termites and other wood destroying insects such as carpenter ants during the home inspection.

We have found termites and carpenter ants hidden behind ivy on exterior walls, and when they find moist wood, it is just what carpenter ants are looking for to build a nest.

Some people love the look of ivy on the house, but it is really not what you want growing onto your house.

We always recommend removing growth like this from the siding, not just for insects reason, but we have seen ivy growing behind the siding and reaching second floor windows with rotted woor frames.

This is a ladder for carpenter ants who don't really care how high they are, they just want a nest for their young, and they love when a homeowner makes it easy for them. This gives them more energy to bore through your lumber.

So keep the foliage away from your siding. If you walk around your entire house with one shoulder touching the siding and you walk into a tree of bush, it is too close to your house!
