Misconceptions of Weather in Sedona Arizona

Temp Almanac from sperryr.com

The average number of days over 90º in Phoenix are 168! That is 5.6 months! 92-107 of those days average over 100º.  Even though the average number days at 110º or above is only 18, in 2007 Phoenix experienced 29 days of heat over 100º. In 1993, 76 days in a row were over 100º. (see climate). Phoenix also has an average of 3 haboobs a year.  This is the name given to blowing dust storms.

The daytime temps in Phoenix may seem harsh but it is the overnight temps that do not cool down that takes it's toll.  Air conditioners are on constantly.

Don't misunderstand what I am saying about Phoenix.  We enjoy the desert and Phoenix/Scottsdale area.  My husband and I actually go there during the summer to enjoy the resorts and the "Lazy Rivers" that some of the resorts offer.  During winter, there is no better place to enjoy the weather golf resorts, and outdoor sports. In fact the busiest time of the year is Baseball's Spring Training (Cactus League), mid February through March.

Sedona Weather - 10º to 15º Cooler - Year Round

There are a lot of people who equate the Sedona area weather to that of Phoenix.  Our temps are mild compared to many areas of the country during the summer.  We average low humidty even during monsoon season, which makes the warm tempertures very bearable.

Sedona 2014 Summary for Winter & Spring posted on sperryr.com - along with other stats from 2011 through 2014.  We have a weather station in the backyard and monitor all the stats .

Sedona (CoffeePot Cottages-Soldiers Pass) hit 90º for the first time at 15:07 on May 3rd. We average 91 to 110 days at 90º + for the year. Our first day of 100º will come sometime in June and we will get 28 days or less of 100º. In 2013 we only had 16 days at 100º + . June has the hottest days of the year but July averages the HIGHEST low temperatures of the year which makes the mean temperature rise. We put the air conditioner on at night less than a handful of nights throughout the summer and generally the last day of 100º is around mid August.

Sedona has a "dry heat", especially this time of year. May 4th the humidity got as low as 8% at 16:30!

Give Sedona a chance during the summer.  There are many areas in Northern Arizona that average very pleasent temps during the summer.  Places like Prescott, Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon are a short drive.  If you decide to go to the Grand Canyon, you might want to stay overnight.

Don't forget that Sedona does offer 4 seasons, if you don't want to come here during the summer.  We can enjoy the beautiful white stuff in the winter without all the headaches of endless days of snow-snow-snow. We get the wonderful colorful scenary of a long spring and the beautiful color of crisp light sweater temps of fall.  May and June get the least amount of rain as well.

Sherry:  This is very interesting and useful information!  I had no idea that there was that great a difference between the two cities.  We've visited Sedona twice and thought it absolutely beautiful .. and actually looked at some property (thinking retirement ahead!).  Your info makes it even more enticing to consider ...

Gene - We were pleasantly surprised at the climate.  When people are not sure, I always advise them to visit during winter and summer before they buy.

Anna - Looking forward to getting together!
