Bridget Sentz, Realtor & Carolyn Smith, Realtor ~ Coastal Estate Team – Brevard County, FL Jobs: Melbourne is Becoming Nation’s Aerospace and Engineering Leader
A couple of months ago, we brought you the exciting news about 1800 new high paying jobs that would be coming to Melbourne: 1800 New High Paying Jobs Coming to Melbourne. Full details hadn’t been released at the time, but the project sounded very promising for Brevard County’s economy and job market.
Finally, details have been released and the news is even better than expected; it turns out that Northrop Grumman is the company behind “Project Magellan”, a plan that will potentially bring 1800 new jobs to Melbourne over the next 5 years. These jobs are in the aerospace industry, paying an average of $100,000 a year, and will involve military work for U.S. and allied forces. Northrop Grumman, a staple employer in the Melbourne area for many years, will be adding to its already extensive operations at Melbourne International Airport, resulting in a $500 million capital investment. The first phase of the project will involve construction of a new 220,000 square foot office building and the addition of 300 jobs. Follow on phases include the construction of additional facilities totaling 500,000 square feet and 1,500 additional jobs.
This project will result in a tremendous economic boost for the Space Coast, along with solidifying Melbourne’s role as a major aerospace hub. In fact, Economic Development Commission officials call this “the nation’s largest economic development project in the past 5 years”, as implications from the project will stretch beyond the local aerospace industry, to areas such as housing, retailing, and the education system.
So how exactly will it affect the housing industry, you ask?
