This is a FIRST-HAND tribute to REALTORS® who , when faced with an emergency, hold steady- it is a true story that happened last week at my Broker-in-Charge continuing education class- with an UPDATE and a note from the fortunate broker about whom I wrote... SEE COMMENT # #19
We are wishing you (and all ) happiness and a "double rainbow "...
Tuesday- It was a sunny and mild day. I headed out for our annual Broker-in-Charge continuing education class. Parked under a tree and walked in with plenty of time to get situated before class started. Found a seat in the second row and had a great 15-minute conversation with the tall, middle-aged broker who sat directly in front of me.
We talked about horse farms and land (as a land broker, you know I love that topic) the Kentucky Derby, California Chrome, that fabulous horse, the winner, and the broker’s boyhood. He shared tales of his time in the stables of a California breeder, details about horse breeding and how much he loved that experience. He was glowing as he shared his story.
Class began. First section done. Second session. Thoughts about “permissible terms” is “walkable” one, I was wondering when suddenly a stir swept across the table in front of me-
My horse-loving broker – now on his back - lay unconscious before me. He wasn’t responding… .
“GET HIM DOWN ON THE FLOOR!!!” the broker next to him had commanded. “CLEAR ROOM FOR HIM!”
Tables crammed together. I was pinioned between them, looking directly over the scene. Another broker who, lucky for our fallen colleague was a nurse, and two other brokers trained in CPR began working on him. No other sound was heard in that packed classroom except the emergency thumping and breathing down for life…. His face now deep purple…
The broker next to me called 911, I gave the description of our location.
“CLEAR A PATH FOR THE PARAMEDICS!! …
the same calm but authoritative broker’s voice- he who sat next to the man now lying on the floor, announced. And with only a whisper of movement, a path opened. Next, the full class quietly left, except for me and a couple others (still placed between tables) as TEAM REALTOR® continued steady at work.
Five minutes. It seemed longer. The paramedics arrived. 5 times on the paddles. Not responding. Then the ambulance came. He was gone. I was calm. Until I got to my car parked under the shade tree, when I found that I was shaking. …and what about the outcome?
Wednesday: Appointment with a broker friend to talk about blogging. I said that time, and how we use it, is precious and asked if I could share a story. I started …
“Yesterday I was in the BIC continuing education class…and…”
“OH MY GOD!!” She said…were you in the class where the man had a massive heart attack? …
“YES! How did you hear about it?” I responded.
“The broker sitting next to him, texted me. We are doing a deal together. That broker went in the ambulance to the hospital with him to support his wife and let her know what happened….”
“Did he survive?”
YES…. I ‘m the bearer of Good Karma…
* I’d like to add that being in the company of REALTOR® Brokers-in-Charge who exemplify the best practices of our profession in an emergency is an honor.
UPDATE: It's been about 2 weeks now since I reported the story above. Time for the next continuing education class. On my way in to class, I stopped in the “back room” at the Real Estate School for a cup of tea. Another student and I began chatting. And, would you believe this-??- she turned to be the wife of the Broker described above!!
“OH!” she said, "My husband was so concerned about the “little lady” who was right behind him…. " “She must have been so frightened!” he had told his wife.
“That was me!” I said, amazed and touched that he is so generous. "I was praying for the highest good of all concerned and a multitude of guardian angels," I assured her. "It is AWESOME that he thought of me!"
WHAT A GUY!!
So.. a post script and another tribute to Real Heart ... .
