A Typo DOES Make a Difference in Title

I had a specific errand to run this morning. I went to the Honolulu Department of Motor Vehicles (Satellite City Hall) at Pearlridge Shopping Center to correct 'someones' mistake.  Seems that in January it was time to renew my registration for my one year old car and lo and behold I notice that my husband's name is spelled wrong. It says, GART instead of GARY.

The only "GART" I could find online was from Wikipedia....Gart is an abbreviation of The Graphics Address Remapping Table (GART) is an I/O memory management unit (IOMMU) used by AGP and PCI Express graphics cards, through which textures, polygon meshes and other data is loaded directly from the computer's physical memory utilizing DMA.

Just thought I'd clarify that point because this was the second time going to correct this (because I didn't have my title with me last time) and this is what I told the lady,"I am not married to a GART nor do I believe there are any GART's in Hawaii...... And someone needs to correct this."

I whipped out my purchase contract for my car (I had traded in and paid cash for the rest so I had full title, contract, registration, safety inspection, insurance card in hand) to show them that ALL paperwork for the car was in order.....except for the Title and Registration had a typo. One LETTER typo. One. But it made all the difference in the world. My husband's name WAS NOT .....Gart.

I explain to the girl, "The letter T and Y are located next to each other on the keyboard. You think it may have been a typo?"  (in my head I'm saying.....duh....)  She then says she will fax a request to the Honolulu Main Office of DMV and if it is their mistake they will reissue a 'revised title' and registration. If it is not their mistake I will have to go back to the dealership and they will have to correct the paperwork and send it in. (What part of the contract didn't she see?)

Within 15 minutes they receive a confirmation fax....it was THEIR clerk's mistake and they have reissued a 'clear title' (thought I'd make it sound RE related lol) and registration.

It took one year and two months to notice the mistake ....and two trips to get this corrected........ All for a "Y".

Might have easier to change his name to Gart.  :)

Sally, now use your imagination, the rabbit ears and Gart ........... hummmmmm.  Sounds like another spicy blog to me .......... LOL

03/25/2008 10:07 PM by George Souto (McCue Mortgage Co.)

Sandra: LOL!  I don't think I can look at Gary and call him Gart :)

George: That's pretty funny....I got Gary on the phone and reading this to him lol! I better go put some bunny something on before he gets home and spanks me for this....Hmmm...

Sally, it is very important that we pay attention to how things --- especially "names" are spelled. That's one of my pet peeves........people not paying attention to how I spell my name!! I am overly cautious since it's a big deal to me. ;-)

Teri: I know what you mean.... who would have thought they'd misspell Gary.  I ALWAYS check my name as it is misspelled often too....no e at the end...start with an s and stuff like that.

Sally, I know how you feel.  There was a typo made on the deed to my house.  Seems my house belongs to Robertala Rocca.  As you can see, the space is in the wrong place and the beginning of my last name is part of my first name!  I have been trying for 5 years to have this corrected and still can't get it right.  I was on the phone again today with the assessor's office.  Now, I have to go back to the title company again!!!  I'm thinking of changing my first name to Robertala!!

03/26/2008 12:00 AM by Roberta LaRocca - REALTOR® Las Vegas (Keller Williams Realty The Marketplace)

Oh goodness Roberta! Now that is pretty bad...  Keep on it...it will make a difference!

Sally-Well, George has a point....those Rabbit ears seem to fit a GART :)   I am still laughing at how you said duh.....since the T and Y are next to each other, it could be a typo ~ DUH....LOL :)  Thanks for this great laugh...now I am signing off :)

03/26/2008 12:14 AM by CELLing Realty

Sally- My children use to ask "Y" all the time. I would just say, because I said so. It would take only seconds. Your gart explanation was very complete. Thanks. Have a better day tomorrow.

Way to Go Sally! The trials and tribulations we citizens have to go through so the lesser intelligent among us can be guaranteed employment through our states and local governments is remarkable.

Good morning Sally,

I was thinking, (Oh my! and it's still morning!) Maybe Grat is the one with the bunny ears and Gary is the one you take out in public. Hummmm   guess that's not the case.

It was refreshing to learn that DMV admitted they made the mistake, that is worth a new blog in itself.

Have a great day!

Sally - Say hello to Gart for me!  Just kidding.  Oh don't you just love the DMV! I was there just a couple of weeks ago. The women next to me had been there for 5 hours trying to get a license, (and this was her third trip to the DMV) she finally gets it and they spell her name wrong!  Took her another hour for them to correct their typo.

03/26/2008 06:25 AM by Guilford Connecticut Real Estate Agent, Sandra Cummings (William Raveis Real Estate)

I have a major problem with our DMV...they can't seem to verify my insurance which was never cancelled on one car but shows on my other..making me go to the office and inconveniencing me. Also they don't seem to understand that an SUV I traded in back in 2005 still shows on my record...I had to hunt down the old company and have them send me a letter that I had to bring back to the office to get it off my records...I once got a ticket because they never sent me the renwal...that I should know that it expires on my brithday...like that's the first thing I think about on my birthday. Say hello to Gart:)

03/26/2008 06:38 AM by Neal Bloom-Realtor ® Assoc.-CRS-Weston FL (RE/MAX Premier Associates)

Sally, Don't you just love that. Like you have nothing better to do with your time but to make round trips at $4 a gallon just for a "Y"

03/26/2008 06:45 AM by My Favorite Mortgage.net - Matthew J Blum

Good morning Sally,
Sandra's comment was fantastic, I would say she has had some experience dealing with DMV.  Let's see there is the water company, the electric company, cable company & DMV......can't get out of any of these without my blood pressure skyrocketing!

03/26/2008 07:11 AM by Cynthia Tilghman, Realtor® Onslow County NC Home Specialist (Kingsbridge Realty, Inc)

Sally, thanks for the chuckle this morning.  If they couldn't spell Gary right, imagine the trouble they must have had getting some of those Hawaiian words spelled.  LOL.

Sally: good one! So technically you are also married to possibly the brother of Gary Sheeseman. Its not fun when it happens to you. I wonder if you could charge the town for their mistake?  Probably would cost to much or  then they would send the check to Gart.

03/26/2008 07:25 AM by LLoyd Nichols~SW Florida Homes (Right Choice Realty LLC)

Sally,

Makes you just want to scratch your head and ask y??? It could have been worse it could have been 'Garu'!!! LOL Thanks,   Fran

03/26/2008 08:15 AM by Fran 'The Title Man' Gaspari Title Insurance-PA & NJ (Patriot Land Transfer, Inc.)

Sally, doesn't it make it just make you wonder why it is so hard for them to fix?  If you or me, in our business see a typo, we fix it!  Why on earth does it take an act of congress, especially whe you have the paperwork in front of you, for the places like DMV to fix something!?

03/26/2008 08:17 AM by Audrey June-Forshey, GRI, Gaithersburg, MD (RE/MAX Realty Group)

I dunno, Sally.  Gart sounds like a pretty cool name!  Great for a conversation starter!  And being just a little bit sloppy can turn into someone else's pain in the necj.  I mean neck!

03/26/2008 08:44 AM by Patricia Kennedy (Evers & Company)

My last name was spelled wrong last year on plane tickes to Europe.  They got everyone else's right in the family but mine.  It was not a reservation we made ourselves online so it was either the travel agent or the airline.  In any case it was a total pain to fix but we are glad we caught it before travel day.

Sally, what a story.  I think it is univeral that DMVs are frustrating and difficult.  I always dread having to go to them although at least here the  offices are so small it's a bit easier than CA.  I'm glad you got your "Y"!

Diane: We have big offices and all the "Satellite" offices all around the island....  it's still not easy :)

Pam: All in the manner of how I handle it :)  Actually, it was longer...we found out in January ... although technically it was over a year because our title was mailed in Jan 07. ....and I didn't like it one bit :)

03/26/2008 11:27 AM by Celeste "SALLY" Cheeseman (RA), Hawaii Real Estate & Hawaii Relocation (Century 21 Liberty Homes -Mililani, Hawaii)

Sally-at least it is fixed! :)  So now he is officially Gary and no longer Gart!  I have to tell you I posted not too long ago a post with the owner of our company's name.  Its simple right Nancy Dance...little did I know and for weeks it was up...the title read Nanny Dance...so glad I came across that before she did.  I think typo's are so easy to do and sometimes regardless of spell check...or rereading...I find typo's all the time.

Now as far as the department of motor and vehicles...these types of mistakes can be costly...and really I wonder how hard can it be?????

Sally, way to go.  That Y is very important.    I remember once asking my Grandmother to spell my name properly.  She was spelling Cathy instead of Kathy.  Her next card to me she spelled my name as Kathie.  At that point, I thought it would probably be hopeless.  I loved her dearly.

03/26/2008 02:02 PM by McHugh Realtors

Kathy: Aww...grammas...don't ya love them? It is important...it can make a difference between owning something or not....because of a typo.

Sally - just think what the lack of or addition of a simple 0 could be in a contract - the difference between $300000 and $3000000!  ($300,000 and $3,000,000 but it looked like an easier mistake without the commas)

Woo-hoo... Ain't it the truth; one typo can really screw up things.   Good going on the feature!

Sounds so typical of a governmental screw-up. You're probably lucky that you were able to get it corrected at all considering it was DMV.

Glad it all worked out.

That was fast.  It has taken me nearly 25 years to get the tax department to close an old excise tax account.  Last year the manager explained to me that it takes time for the changes to take.  I asked her how many more years they needed.  Don't you love government?

Sally, no Garts in Hawaii?  I wonder if there's anyone named Gart anywhere in the U.S.?  Add an "h" and it becomes Garth -- both a great country singer, and Wayne's sidekick on Wayne's World.  One letter can make all the difference.

I used to be married to a Robert.  When my credit card renewal card came. it said William.  Your story reminded me of how much trouble I had to get it changed with that credit card company.  What a mess.  And to this day I have no idea where the William came from!

I would have changed the name to Gart.  Besides here in Detroit you would have waited in line for at least an hour to get to them
