Rare and Short Lived Lunar Moth

Based on the climate in which they live, the Luna Moths produce differing numbers of generations. In Canada and northern regions, they can live up to 7 days and will produce only one generation per year. These reach adulthood from early June to early July. In the northeastern United States around New Jersey or New York, the moths produce two generations each year. The first of these appear in April and May, and the second group can be seen approximately nine to eleven weeks later. In the southern United States, there can be as many as three generations. These are spaced every eight to ten weeks beginning in March.

I had one of these beauties on my deck the other day and I don't recall ever seeing anything like it before so I was a little cautious around it.  I had no idea what it was until today when I saw a tweet from Everything Georgia @GAFollowers.  They posted the picture below calling it a Lunar Moth, so that started my research.

I now have a much better appreciation of this mysterious creature but instinctively had immediate respect when I first discovered it on my deck a few days ago.  It stayed in the same place for several days, didn't appear that it had moved at all during that time.  I checked on it every morning and then the third or fourth morning, it was gone. It makes me a bit sad that they only live about seven days.  I am glad I had the good sense to let it be when I first discovered it.

Huh, if it only lives 7 days I wonder why it was stationary so long? Or did it just return there in the morning?

Donna, they really are beautiful. When I think of a Moth, I think of the typical brown annoying kind. This Lunar Kind though is beautiful, and so sad they only live 7 days. Interesting post. Thanks for sharing.

Than Maynard:

Perhaps, but it was in the very same spot an d position for the days it stayed around so I believe it rested there for all that time.  I was surprised to see it had moved on by the 3rd or 4th day.  Lost count on the days.

Tamra Lee Ulmer:

Like you, those typical moths that show up when a light is on are annoying to me as well  This one (which I really didn't know what category to put it in) was so pretty and big that I felt the best thing to do was leave it alone.  It's so odd that I don't recall ever seeing anything like this before and then I happen to see a tweet about it this morning which was so enlightening.

Hi Donna,

thank you for posting. I never really thought of moths as beautiful but the one pictured is stunning.

Wayne and Jean Marie Zuhl:  I know, it sounds a bit odd to classify a moth as beautiful.  In my mind, it's more fitting to think of this particular moth as a butterfly; but regardless, very pretty moth and that it is so rare, makes it special.

That the prettiest moth I've ever seen! I would be timid around it too. It's so foreign looking!

Irma Beltran: The credit for the picture goes to Everything Georgia on Twitter. I agree, they made a great picture.

Paul Collier: Hauntingly - good word.  That is sort of the feeling that came over me when I first discovered it on my deck.

Whitney Watson: So true. I can't believe I have never seen one of these before.
