I try to stay ahead of the Technology curve and it seems to me that the wind is blowing in the direction of Internet video. Now I have a monster marketing plan, if someone is looking for a house in my area they see my listings. The plan is effective, but it isn't cheap!
So rather than hire some fancy company to shoot my video I decided to tackle it myself. So here is what I did.
Mini Camcorder From Flip Video: $150 Windows Movie Maker: Came with my Computer Logitech Microphone: $27 YouTube Membership: Free Bribing my Wife to do the Voice Over: Empty the Dishwasher Background Music: Free (search for royalty free music)
For an out of pocket cost of $177 I am on my way. Does it look like Steven Spielberg filmed it, NO. Do I think it gets the job done, I think so. I imagine I will only get better over time but I think this will work for now. Real Estate home show charges $99 or more for a "Video Slide Show" which is really just zooming in and out of still photographs. They are nice, and I may still use them from time to time but I think the better I get at this, the more I will provide it as a service.
This one is a little longer than I would like, I will try to keep them to between 2-4 minutes in the future, but with-out further ado:

Hi Rob, that is a great first video. The only couple suggestions I have would be to invest in a tripod. It doesn't need to be an expensive one and I have found it really improves on the look of the video. The last thing is to make sure to remember to turn extra slow to make it a little easier on the viewer's eyes. Good luck.
Mike - I agree, It is a little shaky. That is top on my list of things to fix next time. I think I am going to try shorter segments rather than one long video as well
Garreth - I think I have it tagged right, hopefullt it will show up
I think it is great that you manage to do this yourself.......I don't even know how to make a video or load one........congratulations......you'll win an academy award with a little time to perfect this.......
Thanks for having the courage to post this. I would suggest a music change though! J/K
Nice job, thanks for the info on the software and camera you used as well. Video tours have been on my list of things to do. That list seems to get longer and longer!!! Thanks again.
Rob - If you are concerned about length you could try breaking the video into segments. We do the slide show thing you are talking about and if we take enough pictures it works fairly well, We had a videographer do one listing for us and it turned out really well (it sold the property) We had him break it down into small segments for the web and a full length version on DVD which the vendor ran on his big screen tv when the house was being shown. Potential Purchaser, agents that showed the property, and the vendors were all impressed and liked the outcome. (google everspring farm if you want to check it out)
Rob I have a question...and it may sound silly but what do you need the YouTube membership for? Do you need it for compiling the footage? This is something I would like to do also but have always balked at the expense.
I would post your videos on WellcomeMat or ZipVo - the quality is infinitely better than YouTube, and you're with other real estate videos, not a 400 pound naked men getting slapped with bolgna slices. You can also use WellcomeMat's chaptering option, which is very cool.
Rob, What a great first video. We have a flip video and we love it, we take it everywhere with us, you never know when you will have a great localism shot to video. David also takes it on all of his inspections and video tapes most of his findings now so that if the client has any questions, instead of just having pictures(which he includes in the report) he also has a video to refer back to and he can also send it to the client. People have loved it so far. Congrats on moving forward with video.
That was actually pretty good. Only one thing, at times when moving left to right (or vice versa) you moved to fast causing blurs. I'm sure though, you will figure that out with experience. Your wife's voiceover was pretty good as well. The emptying of the dishwasher was a bit steep, perhaps you can negotiate a better deal next time though. I would try a sincere "good job" when she returns from taking out the trash?
I've been doing a little consulting on the side with RealtyTimes.com and they have a cool new video news feature, they compile, edit, and add VO and live announcer to any property in a News Format very Viral. See sample on their youtube channel or check out www.south-of-the-blvd.com all for 99 bucks or so...
Rob, I can honestly say that I've never done a You tube and what an accomplishment! I use Jeff's Real Estate Shows since I need something easy. I hope you sell quickly and get going on your next video.
I like the fact that agents can learn that you don't have to be a techno-phile to do things like this, AND you don't have to invest a lot of cash either!
Great post - keep doing things that are outside the box and your business will skyrocket!
Great job. A little shaky, perhaps try using a pole or tripod and zoom in to feel like walking closer. I am envious, I havn't gotten the courage to move beyond the mini DVD disk recorder then snail mailing it to the client.
Rob, great job on your first video!, One suggestion is slow down as you walk through and use a simple tripod (such as this one) that will help stabilize the video. The flip video recorder is great.
Not bad, not bad at all! I'm about to embark on my first listing that I promised the owners a video tour myself... I just might give it a try. Thanks for the encouragement!
Rob, You did ia great job and wife has a great voice-over presence. This little video of yours presents the house in an outstanding way. Don't forget to check your youtube stats when the sellers want to know how many showings you've had...because I think this would count! :)
I love it! I personally am a big DIY person. So save the money learn a new skill and become great at it. Hey you can only get better....right?! Good Luck and Best Wishes. Your wife did a great job too!
<applause> Wow! It takes courage to do this. You did a great job for the first time. It could use a little bit of editing, such as taking out some of the panning and go directly to the next point. The narrating was good.
