The next exciting event coming to Gordonsville VA will be held on the lawn of the Exchange Hotel on June 1st from 3 to 5. Live music from the era of the Civil war. The performance will be by the Orange Community Band. Food will be available for purchase. Admission is just $5 and will include a tour through the Exchange Hotel. The hotel is rich with history and some say is haunted. The Exchange Hotel has been featured on many paranormal television shows. Originally the hotel catered to travelers of the railroad. Visitors came to the Exchange Hotel on the Virginia Central Railroad the Alexandria Railroad. The local women carried platters of fried chicken to the railroad passengers on their heads. Gordonsville became famous at that time for it's fried chicken. Gordonsville VA earned the nickname "chicken-leg center of the universe". Back during the civil war era the hotel became a receiving hospital for the injured. The hotel provided care for some 70,000 injured soldiers, both confederate and union. The hospital also served newly freed slaves. The property was restored in 1971. The hotel was named a the National Historic Landmark. In June 2002 it became an African-American Memorial Site.
