Rain in April is a given for us in Louisville, and we like to have some indoor activities left to check off in the spring that help get us in the mood for festival season. The Give Peace a Chance exhibit at the Muhammad Ali Center is a perfect precursor to Abbey Road on the River, the world's largest Beatles inspired music festival running May 22-26 in Louisville.
April Showers bring May Music Festivals and a Need for Indoor Entertainment
Give Peace a Chance is currently on exhibit at the Muhammad Ali Center through May 26, the last day of Abbey Road on the River. In 1969 John Lennon and Yoko One held a "bed-in" to gain attention for their message of peace. They stayed at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal where media conducted interviews and celebrities visited to spread their message. The song "Give Peace a Chance" was written during their bed-in and first recorded at the hotel with a host of celebrities participating in the recording.

The exhibit at the Ali Center is a collection of photos and stories from the room where John and Yoko stayed at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel. Visitors are permitted to sit on the edge of the bed. The exhibit should provide a perfect rainy afternoon diversion for a Beatles fan who is eager for Abbey Road on the River. The Ali Center's permanent exhibits will round out the afternoon nicely. The Ali Center is located on Museum Row in Louisville at 144 North Sixth Street. Please note that it is closed on Mondays, but open every other day until 5:00pm.
Yes, They Have Met but Not in Louisville
From this exhibit and its venue the obvious question arises. Did John Lennon and Muhammad Ali ever meet. The answer is easily obtained upon search and is a yes. They met in 1964, fifty years ago for a very comical photo session worth a glance.
