Rotary of Spring Hill Florida bids Farewell to Exchange Student from Ecuador
At the weekly meeting of my Rotary of Spring Hill, Florida, club, we had the pleasure to welcome once more Gerardo Piedra, an exchange student from Ecuador who had been spending the last ten months in our area.
He was accompanied by Assistant District Governor Mike Fitzgerald who was also his host during part of this time.
Gerardo gave a wonderful presentation of his time as an exchange student in the United States. He shared with us his experiences and impressions attending school at Hernando High School to activities with other exchange students and last but not least his involvement with the various Rotary Clubs of the District and their projects. He was also happy to have been able to participate in some traveling to New York City, Washington, DC, and more.
Gerardo's enthusiasm certainly showed outward in his attire - throughout his time here, he had been receiving and collecting special pins and fastened them to his jacket - every time we saw him, the had multiplied! But it also clearly showed in his presentation and he expressed his desire to one day return as an exchange college student. It was a delight to listen to him as he spoke about things we take for granted but were special or unusual for him. This young man showed tremendous spirit and understanding of the concepts of Rotary International as "service above self" and he was especially proud to have met some very special Rotary dignataries while attending conferences and other Rotary functions.
Gerardo will return to his home country and family in a couple of weeks. We wish him well and will certainly miss his enthusiasm.
