How to decrease your home's carbon footprint

Going green . . . how many times have you heard that phrase?

Being environmentally conscious isn't a fad, and the nice thing is that it's not that difficult to take the first few steps in reducing your home's carbon footprint.

Composting and recycling are two easy steps to take, and here's an easy way to get the most out of your efforts.

Going Green in NanaimoFirst, get into the frame of mind where you only have two choices with your trash - recycling or composting.  In other words, whatever can't be recycled has to be able to be used as compost for plant food.  When you start to think this way, you'll be surprised at how much recycled glass, paper and plastic you have and at how little compostable material you have . . . which is a good thing.

Next, set aside a small part of your yard or get a tumbling composting barrel.  You can do this even if you only have a small patio for outdoor space.   Follow the instructions, being sure to keep things aerated, and you'll end up with rich compost for plant food in no time at all.

Finally, be sure to keep a supply of energy efficient light bulbs on hand, so that as your older bulbs burn out you can replace them with the more environmentally friendly bulbs.

If you have the budget, consider replacing your washing machine with a smaller 'European' style machine, the type that is front loading.  Yes, you may find yourself doing laundry more often . . . but you'll be shocked at how little water and detergent you use - and how much money you can save in the long run.
