Why Newcastle Island Should Be On Your Must-Do List

Newcastle Island Provincial Park is a huge, 360 hectare island accessible only by boat.  It's a marine park rich in natural and cultural history where the entire family can hike the 22 km long trail system, bike or kayak, sail, picnic, and even camp over night.

Newcastle Island was used by the Snuneymuxw people for thousands of years, and is a refreshing escape right across the harbour from bustling Nanaimo.

Newcastle Island walking trailsIn addition to finding the First Nation's presence and culture on the Island you'll also be able to explore the rich histories of coal mining, quarrying, and herring salteries. . . all of these add up to making Newcastle Island a one-of-a-kind eco-tourism destination.

Newcastle Island is located in Nanaimo Harbour, very close to downtown Nanaimo.  The easiest way to get to the Island is by taking the Nanaimo Harbour Ferry that leaves from Maffeo Sutton Park near downtown.  If you're a dog lover, don't feel that you have to leave your furry friend at home.  Dogs are permitted on the Ferry at no charge - be sure to keep in mind that if you do bring your dog the Island is always leash-only.
