Commemorate - Start by Honoring Those Who Served
Memorial Weekend is a bit of a dichotomy: we solemnly honor those who have served, and joyously celebrate the unofficial start of summer. But our country’s unique motto: “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness” suggests that both are noble undertakings.
Memorial Day is a federal holiday, originally established to commemorate soldiers who died in the Civil War, now honors all Americans who have died while in military service. We are grateful that here in Clark County, we have many opportunities to both commemorate and celebrate life.
Fort Vancouver Barracks will host the largest Memorial Day Event in the area. On May 26th, the Community Military Appreciation Committee will honor more than 500 local service members at the Clark County Veterans Memorial at 11:00 am. The keynote speaker will be Col. Richard W. Wedan, commander of the Oregon Air National Guard’s 142nd Fighter Wing, based in Portland. Other dignitaries and military officials will speak in honor of our country’s fallen.
