Fishhawk Cemetery Memorial Day Memories

By

I originally posted this a number of years ago. Ironically, there will be new homeowners here soon whose son is buried in the Fishhawk Cemetery. They have "come home" to live full time at Fishhawk Lake. Now they will always be close to him.

Fishhawk Cemetery Memorial Day- A Pictorial of Passed Lives

Fishhawk Cemetery is teeming with history from our local small community in Birkenfeld Oregon. There are names that go back generations of families that I currently know. This story of pictures serves as a testament to those who have passed and yet still remain to touch all of us.

It was an honor to walk through Fishhawk Cemetery on a gloriously warm day in mid May 2011. The treasures from the simplest to the most ornate were abundant to my photographic eye. From the drive up,

to the rustic and yet majestic sign gracing the entrance to the cemetery,

to the trees that gracefully hug the boundaries in and around the stones, I found this to be a magical place filled with solitude and solace. Fishhawk Cemetery Trees

There were symbols of what each person

was like in life. Some happened to be living flowers, and some were even humorous.

There were two generations of veterans, side-by-side a father and son who'd both given their lives for our country in two very different wars.

The sun and skies brought shadows that played on the stones.

As I continued to spend time with each row of memorials, it brought about other opportunities for

photos to be taken.

Each one had such a different feeling to it! The "art" in this lovely quiet place really spoke to me.

I found myself loving all of these people and thanking them for the chance to share their lives.

A~to me a cemetery is a place for reflection...not scary at all, but what you said..touchstones to remind us of LIFE...here and hereafter.

Gayle,

A lovely and meaningful tribute to our fallen Soldiers. May they rest in peace in the beautiful resting grounds at Fishhawk Lake Cemetary.

Thank you for your comments to my post too. You're a special woman and a friend in the RAIN.

Good afternoon Gayle. How very heartfelt and poignant. I too visit cemeteries and yet not where my parents are: perhaps because I feel like they are already with me. Really lovely and suggested.

Excellent post Gayle, particularly fitting for this weekend with Memorial Day. I am a huge cemetery fan and love touring them myself. I know it probably makes me weird, but it is something that has fascinated me like forever. You did so well with so many photos on this one.

Lovely post Gayle. We are remembering the nephew who was KIA two years ago. A flag is flying on our porch to honor him - and all of the vets.

( By the way, thrilled with your news)  :) :) :)

Hi Gayle,

I remember my last visit to Morristown, Tennessee, we stopped to see my grandmother's and uncle's graves and many other relatives I had never known. What I remember most was the beautiful cemetary with shady trees, green grass, and huge grave stones/statues. I have not been there in 25 years but I remember it like it was yesterday. I would stop and read the verses written and wonder why and what happened. I should go back and visit again.

Gayle, I so agree, a cemetery is a place for reflection...  I'm not scared, though on occasion I feel a chill as I ride the river of life. I think as I go along in life I worry to much about talking about the past. I don't dwell there, but I honor it more now than I ever understood it before. We all just show up when we do and it's our gig to be the best we can be in our time. Love this post, and thanks. I'd love to stop by and see this place next time I pass by...

I am looking for my Grandfather's grave. I was named after him. He was my Mom's Father. R.B. DeRosia was his name. I am thinking he is in this cemetery. I live in Michigan and would appreciate any help in locating his grave. Thank you, R.B. Barnby. 443-801-8101..
