I originally posted this a number of years ago. Ironically, there will be new homeowners here soon whose son is buried in the Fishhawk Cemetery. They have "come home" to live full time at Fishhawk Lake. Now they will always be close to him.
Fishhawk Cemetery Memorial Day- A Pictorial of Passed Lives
Fishhawk Cemetery is teeming with history from our local small community in Birkenfeld Oregon. There are names that go back generations of families that I currently know. This story of pictures serves as a testament to those who have passed and yet still remain to touch all of us.
It was an honor to walk through Fishhawk Cemetery on a gloriously warm day in mid May 2011. The treasures from the simplest to the most ornate were abundant to my photographic eye. From the drive up,
to the rustic and yet majestic sign gracing the entrance to the cemetery,
to the trees that gracefully hug the boundaries in and around the stones, I found this to be a magical place filled with solitude and solace.
There were symbols of what each person
was like in life. Some happened to be living flowers, and some were even humorous.
There were two generations of veterans, side-by-side a father and son who'd both given their lives for our country in two very different wars.
The sun and skies brought shadows that played on the stones.
As I continued to spend time with each row of memorials, it brought about other opportunities for
photos to be taken.
Each one had such a different feeling to it! The "art" in this lovely quiet place really spoke to me.
I found myself loving all of these people and thanking them for the chance to share their lives.
(It causes me to stop and ponder about the history of these people whom I shall never know).
