Shame on you GoPro - NoPro!

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Associate Broker

About a month ago I made the much overdue and procrastinated commitment to start video blogging.

My plan: to make specific property marketing videos, community videos, event videos, agent drip campaign videos and even team training videos (like Buyer and Seller presentations). To video blog about the things that my potential customers and clients might be interested in knowing about, you know, come from contribution and service and be the area expert for my target audience.

I did a fair amount of research and decided to start out with the GoPro video camera. It looked easy to use, had a GREAT wide angle for capturing smaller rooms and was highly recommended on the internet.

I had some good results with it e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMVehf_N_AM

But after 3 weeks my GoPro Hero 3 Silver camera stopped working.

It would not power up, then when it did power up it would only record for 30 seconds, it froze in the middle of recording...and on and on.

I Google searched and found out that this specific camera has a known issue - apparently the firmware software platform  for this camera has been riddled with problems since the inclusion of Protune in the software program. There are tons of videos about this on YouTube and even suggested remedies for the problem on the GoPro website. I tried all the remedies but they did not work. I even invested in an extended battery as the out of the box battery does not last long, but I was not able to fix the problem. Apparently even if the remedy did work is was a band aid not a cure; and at best would only make the problem less frequent, not fix it!

So in my opinion there is a latent defect with the product...yet the camera is still being sent to market?

Some advice for you GoPro, you apparently have a great product, speaking in general terms, if one of the versions of the product is not working - REMOVE IT FROM THE MARKET, FIX THE PROBLEM, RECALL FAULTY UNITS and make things right with your customers, or you will become knows as the NoPro camera.

And since I am venting and doling out advice, make your product selection easier- GoPro 2,3,4, white, black, silver... how are consumers supposed to know how to chose the right camera when all the specs are so similar?

...but  digress.

Point of this blog (besides a good venting).

1) Call out "NoPro" for putting out a faulty product to market, and save a few folks the frustration of the learning curve that I have had with the NoPro 3 Silver edition camera.

2) Anyone out there have a better recommendation for a great easy to use, wide angle video recording camera for video blogging?

Feedback after reviewing blog comments 6/12/2014.

The problem I was having was specific to a few models of the camera. I have now replaced the camera with a GoPro Hero 3+ White Edition and so far it is working great.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Mark. Seems like GoPro's lack of dealing with and satisfying customers is bigger problem for them than their product shortcomings.

I'm still procrastinating doing any video and I do appreciate your information and the comments as well.

Sorry about your experience. You sound like you have a solid and quite ambitious video marketing plan. Good for you. I get much of my new business from video marketing efforts. I'm using a Canon Vixia - but the wide angle options aren't great. Therefore, after a LOT of research, I'm getting the Canon EOS 70 DSLR and Wide Angle Lens - I've already got a great tripod and external mic - now I just need to invest in a good lighting set for indoor shoots.  IF I had a bigger budget, I'd buy the Canon EOS 5D Mark lll.

Hi Mark, I am not sure of Sam's Policy but whenever we have something that appears defective, Costco takes it back with full credit. Go back to the store and return it and get another one.

I am the poor guy amongst the crowd, I have the white version, I purchased the video screen pack so I can see what I am filming, I have the plugin mic, and the suction cup for the car, I did buy the bigger sd card so I could shoot video for about 2 hours and I have had zero problems.  Sorry to hear about your issues.  I have the samsung note 3 and wow it is great for pics and videos, I use it all the time.  however if I want time lapse or hands free movement the go-pro is my camera of choice.

Mark,

I will be sure to NOT purchase the GoPro camera.  I had a similar experience with a different brand of video camera a couple of years ago.  I don't do video blogging but do shoot videos of my listings and just do it with whichever camera I am shooting with. I have two that I use for listings.. one is a Canon (don't remember the model) and the other a Nikon D90.

Sounds suspiciously like GM, without the lethal consequences, but bad nonetheless. Hope you reach a good resolution.

Thanks for all the comments and wonderful information. Here are a couple of the nuggets.

  • As I suspected the problem I experienced with my GoPro Camera is isolated to the models that have the Protune software embedded in their firmware, people with other versions of the camera, older or newer, seem to be very happy with their GoPro cameras.
  • Joe Pryor thanks for sharing that link to hdhat.com, which certainly is a useful resource.
  • Rich Arnold thanks for the tip, Steadycam Smoothee
  • Various – Glad to see that so many of you are using your mobile phone cameras for video, which is certainly a convenient option (maybe with a wide angle lens kit and a microphone).
  • Thanks Sarah and Lester Oswald for the comparison to the Sony Action Cam
  • Thanks Debb Janes for sharing your camera recommendation

Great information, I appreciate the comments.

I hope you have a good warranty and can return or exchange. Bad things happen even with the good equipment. Don't let it stop you from making videos:)

I am very surprised to hear that, as these little guys often take heavy abuse and still show no wear-and-tear!

I read many complaints from customers saying the 3+Black camera had image problems with the sharpness from about 10' to infinity. I also read online that Gopro had addressed that issue and it was only with the first three months of the 3+Black production ... no faulty cameras released after 11/13. I purchased the 3+Black a week ago online, the picture was blurred bad starting at about 10' from the camera to infinity, I returned it and purchased another one from a local retailer ... same problem. The build dates in the serial # said one was built in 05/14 the other 06/14. I am returning this newest camera today. NO MORE GOPRO for me either!

I posted a comment on 7/16/14 about the 3+Black edition, I honestly don't like crow ,,, but I am eating it today. I am reposting because I didn't get the chance to return the camera yesterday, I was just too frustrated & tired. I boxed it and planed to return it first thing this morning. Today, for some reason I decided to unbox it and test it again ... to my amazement it recorded absolutely great. I don't know why the change??? I had the 30 second videos & settings saved on my PC from yesterday, I did the exact same settings from the same spot on the patio with the same sunny Southern Utah sky. The difference is night & day. This is what I expected when I purchased this camera.

I have been thinking of doing street videos of the 93 communities in Pelican Bay and I think the drving tour might be the best.  As always, the Go TO place to see others successes or troubles is Active Rain. This is so great!  I love reading all the comments.
