Earlier today, James Dray wrote a post about the ubiquitous symbol red standing for the heart. Barbara Torado commented and mentioned the word blue bloods which got me thinking of the entomology of the word. Naturally, I had to do a search. Here is what I found:
Meaning:
The blood that which flows in the veins of old, wealthy and aristocratic families.
Origin:
A literal translation of the Spanish 'sangre azul', attributed to some of the oldest and proudest families of Castile, who claimed to have never intermarried with other races or creeds. The expression is presumed to have originated in the blueness of the veins of people of fair complexion as compared with those of dark skin.
So, as the late, great Paul Harvey would say, “Now you know the rest of the story…”
