How to Display the Flag on a Holiday

In Clarksville TN and other parts of the country, some businesses and homeowners display The Flag year-round. Others make it a ritual to display the American Flag only on National Holidays. Whichever you prefer, be sure to follow proper protocol and give the flag the respect it deserves. Treat the flag according to the rules of the United States Flag Code

American Flag are you hanging proudly

Here are some quick reminders for Businesses and Homeowners that wish to display the American Flag.

  1. Never let the flag touch the ground.
  2. Hang the flag with the blue square at the top corner never upside down unless in distress.
  3. Keep the flag clean and in good repair.
  4. The flag is to go up a sunrise and down at sunset.
  5. If you choose to display it at all times, the flag needs proper illumination for night-time hours.
  6. When the flag is worn, torn and ready to be retired, the recommended disposal method is burning.
  7. In Clarksville TN, the local post of the VFW can give assistance in the proper disposal of the flag.
  8. On Memorial Day, raise the flag to full mast and then lower to half mast until noon in honor of those that have died in service.

As I drove home last night sitting in traffic watching a flag blow in the rainy wind, I wondered if that home knew how to display the flag and though not. These are great reminders to many who may not know there is a right and wring way,

I Love the FLAG!  I Love this COUNTRY!  After volunteering in the Boy Scout & Cub Scout program for over 20 years, I am so proud to know that others feel that teaching how to display the flag correctly is important too!   Thanks Debbie!

I wonder if this is something they teach in school?  I would suspect that most of the younger generation, unless a military family, are not aware of how to show respect for the flag.

Hi Debbie. great pointers to keep in mind.  I was aware of most of them but honestly had no idea of how to really dispose of a flag.  I hope you are having a great weekend.

Debbie, great basic list that we need to be aware of.  Actually there are many more and one that I can think of is that the flag should only be displayed in fair weather as Scott #18 mentions unless it's an all weather flag.

Debbie, my jaw dropped when I read this: "When the flag is worn, torn and ready to be retired, the recommended disposal method is burning."

I'm not too proud to admit that I had no idea ... I guess it is okay to burn if being done for the right reasons.

Debbie, many folks have no idea there are right and wrong ways to display the flag. In my previous life we displayed flags at a great many public buildings and we had to be very conscious of these do's and don'ts. If the guys messed up, we really got the phone calls!!

Debbie, our flag is out 24/7 and when it gets frayed, it is dropped off at the VFW in town

Debbie, this is so great! Thank you for sharing this with us. I'm afraid my flag is up all the time without any lighting, save for a porch light that illuminates some of it.

Good morning Debbie. I fly the flag everyday an do so with pride and joy. The only time I don't is in a wind storm. Great post and I suggested it.

Debbie -- This is great information.  I was surprise by this one:

  1. When the flag is worn, torn and ready to be retired, the recommended disposal method is burning.
