All You Ever Needed To Know About Blogging SEO, But Were Afraid To Say So.

I know what you are thinking…”not another SEO article, please…”

SEO focused companies have secrets.
They want you to think that you need them to get you to the top of the search engines.
They want you to think that you need to learn the complex details or you will fail.
They want you to think that there is so much that goes into it, that you'd be a fool to not put your faith in them.
They want you to think that your success depends on their knowledge and tools.
They want you to think that their advice will make "all the difference".

SEO-Advice-Take-It-Or-Leave-ItWell folks, the truth is, when it comes to blogging, SEO consulting is a lot like cold medicine.  When you catch a cold, if you don't take medicine you are going to be sick for seven days.  However, if you do take cold medicine it is going to only be a week before you're healthy.

The fallacy of SEO advice is that Correlation does not always imply Causation.  Just because you took your cold medicine, and then got better in a week, it does not imply that it improved your health.  It just made you feel like you were doing something positive.

When it comes to blogging, many of those that are currently holding the top spots in the search engines have done it without much concern for SEO.  In fact, it may have never even crossed their minds.

Well Then, How Did They Do It?

They blogged, they blogged and then they blogged some more.
They blogged on topic.  They blogged on the topic for which they were looking to be found.

So, if you want to be found in the Search Engines for terms that you expect will generate an audience that will develop into leads, then you need to blog those topics.

Is it really that simple, Jim?  Yes it is.

But what about all those advertisements and remedies we hear about that are designed to help us be found in the search engines?  Should I not be taking those as prescribed?
You can.  And they may make you feel better about everything.  But an active blog, on target and on topic is a healthy blog.

So what's the SEO equivalent to "stay home, get some rest, and drink lots of fluids"?  Surely you can't completely ignore some advice.

There are some basic guidelines, but once you read them, you'll realize that they mostly common sense, and not some packaged remedy.

Thanks for the SEO article.  I am in the process of learning all I can about that subject!  It's all been such a mystery to me, but I am a quick learner and I hope to be able to drive lots of traffic to my web site.  Thanks again

Even the term "SEO" scares me, so I am happy to read that steady, consistent blogging can overcome other weakness's.  Appreciate you and your info.

SEO is an importatn tool, and you can approach it an many levels.

To some, SEO=Spend Every Ounce of copper you have-and someone, somewhere will spend more. On SEO.

Or more time at it.

Content is king! Of course, a few keywords never hurt anyone....

The more time I spend on AR the more I learn.  SEO is still however a topic I can learn more about I guess it is a changing and dynamic subject so it is constant.  Love this post as I have been blogging for quite a while and I see my rankings are great, first page for a lot of stuff in my area.  It is however, a lot of work.

I really appreciate this post and the great SEO information.  Do you think blogging can take the place of having a SEO expert?

Debra,

I believe that that argument can be made.  First of all I think that the term SEO expert is a curious one - kind of like being an astrology expert if you know what I mean.  And secondly, the results you can get from consistent blogging and a basic knowledge of the dos and don'ts of SEO will have you ranking very competitively.

Thanks so much for the information.  It is easy for a novice like myself to get pulled in different directions by SEO companies promising "top placement."  It is comforting to know that it is that which I enjoy the most - blogging - that is the key to prominent search engine placement.

We all know - or at least have heard a lot - to blog, blog, blog - consistently and frequently. It's harder to remember to blog on topic. That seems to be a key to good positioning. A friend of mine wondered why his blog wasn't getting results - most of them were just photos (extraordinarily good ones, by the way) and his topics were interesting but all over the place. The spiders are probably looking for a source for a particular keyword.
