Web 2.0 Rule #3 - Build Your MySpace Account In A Way That Does Not Violate Their Terms of Service Rule Of Not Allowing Any Commercial Sites

Basically you have to understand a couple things about Myspace. First of all they make money every time someone clicks one of the many ads they post strategically throughout it. The beauty of their system is that it is completely viral and so far they have over 1.4 Million people connected to their network. With that in mind you have to understand that any efforts in helping them grow that network will be welcomed not shunned. Provided you follow a few simple rules.

Rule #1 - Never ever plaster commercial ads in your bulletins, comments or emails.
Rule #2 - Make your myspace page be a fun community place. Full of fun things to do. Like the sharing of recipes and good restaurants. Or you can post fun things relating to your product or service.
Rule #3 - Never ever put blatant sales copy in your profile. Instead share a few things about yourself as well as a link to your website. You can be creative as you want but keep it classy and short.

Understand technically Myspace has in their Terms of Service that you cannot create a commercial site. But the whole key to my marketing system is to make your MySpace page a completely noncommercial site.

What the heck am I talking about?

How can you make money on MySpace if you're not making the page commercial?

Well the best thing about myspace is the fact that there are over 1.4 Million users on it hungrily looking for new friends. So getting friends on MySpace is really easy. I just do a browse for whatever zip code I need to pull up the appropriate profiles of the specific type of prospect I am looking for. Then I request them to join my network as my friends.

For some reason people accept the unsolicited friend requests very well. In fact I get 5 people out of 10 actually accepting the friend request.

Now when someone on MySpace receives my friend request they immediately click on my profile to see who I am. I came up with the nifty name "Public Domain Hound" to grab their attention. Then of course I have a link on the Myspace page that funnels to my website that opts them in to my list. And that's when my auto responder kicks in.

If you learn to keep your MySpace page up and interesting and not violating the MySpace TOS it will mean that you will have learned a whole new style of networking on the web. And consequently a whole new way to advertise your biz as a result. That's an invaluable skill set to have to say the least.

Consider it 21st Century style of marketing. Or Web 2.0 marketing that is.

Isn't it time we all learn how to interface better with our prospects instead of just slamming our ads at their email boxes?

MySpace in my opinion is just such a tool. So cherish it and nurture it and learn how to network with it! It very well may make more millionaires than any other organization since the creation of man.

That's how strongly I feel about this.

The key is to be a good boy or girl on your MySpace page. Don't be blatantly commercial in anything you do on the network. Add value to the network and you'll always be safe. That's why I suggest you select a topic for your blog that has nothing to do with the actual selling of your service or product. For instance on one of my pages I have the blog devoted to trivia questions. I NEVER try to advertise my service on a bulletin. Instead I only advertise the community portion of my page.

Which in turn drives traffic to my page and my link.

Matt - thanks for clearing up some things I have been wondering about with MySpace!  I will have to look into it again.

I created a page, but I am not soliciting friends as of yet.  Currently I am only allowing my friends and family on my "friends list."  I am not full blown marketing, but I do have reference to my company website and an about me section.  Amazingly the page has actually generated 2 clients for me from friends.  Keeping your name and services in your friends' minds makes them more likely to refer you next time they are in a real estate conversation with someone.  My page is not 100% client appropriate material, but the intention is to keep my name and services in my "actual friend's" minds.

Could you post a link to your page so I can check it out.  Here is mine.

Good post BTW
