Northern Alabama and more specifically my area of Huntsville and Madison have to deal with tornadoes and flash flooding and knowing how to be prepared for emergencies is important to your safety.
After moving to your new home or neighborhood, knowing how to be prepared for emergencies in advance might well save you or a family member's life. In Part 1 I discussed the basics for inside your home.
Know your Home:
Learn how to turn off gas, electrical and water lines in the event of a disaster. Memorize the easiest exits from all rooms in your home. Keep hallways and doorways clear of clutter.
Create a Kit; Create and maintain an emergency kit and keep your kit in an accessible location.
Keep at least a 3 - day supply of water for each person in your family; 1 gallon of water, per person, per day. Ready.gov advises adding a small amount of household chlorine bleach and a medicine dropper to your kit. "When diluted, nine parts water to one part bleach, bleach can be used as a disinfectant. Or in an emergency, you can use it to treat water by using 16 drops of regular household liquid bleach per gallon of water. Don not use scented, color-safe or bleaches with added cleaners."
Maintain a 7+ day supply of any medicine your family needs.
Keep a supply of non-perishable food that you can make easily.
Build and extra tool set and add any additional gear you may need specific to the emergencies you are most likely to encounter in your area. Consider adding several flashlights, matches, camera, whistle, dust masks, can opener, map of the area. Keep fresh batteries for the items that require them; radio, hearing ids, cordless power supply, flashlights, etc.
You should also maintain a 3+ day supply of a variety of clothes for each family member. Also, blankets and personal sanitation wipes towels, etc.
Include a battery or hand crank operated radio.
Consider buying a pre-paid cell phone and keep it charged in your kit. Keep emergency contacts in the phone and written in a notebook.
Keep copies of important documents.
Adjust you kit for Emergency Specific items depending on the family situation or members. Babies, the elderly, pets all have different needs.
Don't wait until an emergency befalls you, get your emergency kit together now and ensure that your family knows what to do. Make sure the family is aware of the kit and know what to do even if you are not around. Be sure to have those important documents and family photos as well in a safe place; a safe deposit box or consider cloud storage so they can be accessed from anywhere.
