Four Gates of Communication

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty DTC

We have all been taught in one way or another that effective communication with others is an essential skill in all aspects of our lives, not to mention the real estate business. Do you often find yourself misunderstanding others? Do you have difficulty getting your point across clearly? When it comes to communication, what you say and what you don't say are equally important.

Recently, my brother, an outstanding journalist, photographer, and yoga enthusiast, brought to my attention the "Four Gates of Communication" and these gave me much to think about in the communication process:

1.      Is it truthful?

2.      Is it non-harmful?

3.      Is it necessary?

4.      Is now the right time?

Even though initially I thought, "I knew that"...I really gave it some thought and realized many times I leave one of the four out of what I'm communicating; particularly "is now the right time?" Sometimes, you just want to share something so much, the timing of it escapes you. So the next time there is a topic of conversation that is of an uncomfortable subject or one where you're letting your buyer know "they accepted your offer!", your professionalism with shine through when you give some thought to the Four Gates of Communication before your delivery.

I agree.  I failed on is now the right time just today.  My mouth can be my biggest enemy especially when I get my feathers ruffled. Thanks for the reminder.
