The world dictionary has many definitions for “awkward”. One of them is “embarrassing” such as an embarrassing moment. I discovered long ago that if you don’t act embarrassed an awkward moment can be a lot less awkward.
Shortly after receiving my Real Estate License I had the opportunity to show a nice married couple properties. This was only the second or third time I had shown property and was really still learning the ropes. We had an appointment at one property, in which the home owners would be present.
After viewing the property the female half of my buyers asked quite casually, if the washer and dryer would be included. The washer and dryer were on the older side. Simultaneously, the male half of the sellers said “no” while the female half said “yes, definitely”. Okay, my buyers looked at me as to say “what’s the answer?” I looked at the sellers and the husband says we are taking them as the wife says we are leaving them. Then, a real argument begins. The wife says I am not having those old things in my new house, as the hubby is saying we can’t afford to replace them.
My buyers were clearly uncomfortable and I said quietly to them, “don’t be concerned we see arguments like this all the time.” Of course I didn’t know if that was true or not I was just trying to ease their discomfort. As the sellers argued more heatedly I handed the husband my business card and said something like we will be in contact with your Realtor. We then left.
As we got into my car my buyers broke out into huge grins and started laughing at what they had just seen. The husband looks at me and says, “I don’t think we’d want to be in an escrow with them.
