North East, Maryland
North East, MD is a great place to be. Whether you are relocating to Aberdeen Proving Ground for BRAC or just visiting for the day.
North East is located in Cecil County, MD at the head of the Chesapeake Bay. It is in between Baltimore MD and Philadelphia. The town of North East was settled prior to the 1700’s and was incorporated in 1850. The population was 2,733 at the the time 2000 census. It consists of approximately 995 acres of land. The town of North East offers “something for everyone”. The main street offers antique stores and restaurants, there are several parks, you can visit historical sites, or enjoy a day on the North East River. North East is a town looking towards the future while preserving it’s historical small town charm. There are several large housing developments, increased commercial growth, surrounding marinas and Elk Neck Park.
North East offers the beauty of the water that attracted its original settlers and the charm of small town life. It is a town full of history. A symbol associated with North East is the Great Blue Heron, meaning that you have found the Land of Pleasant Living.
The North East Riverplayed an important role in the beginning of the town. Mills were built along then rivers, farms grew, and local fishermen found the area to be plentiful. Though the town was settled prior to 1700, it didn't become incorporated until 1850 (Wikipedia says 1849 - not sure who to believe on this one). St. Mary Anne's Episcopal Church has one of the oldest graveyards in the state of Maryland. Here you can find graves of Susquehannock Indians which date back to the 1600s.The main attraction for tourists today is the Chesapeake Bay, restaurants, Maryland crabs (my all time favorite), antique shops, collectibles and history. A few miles south of North East is Elk Neck State Park, which is surrounded on three sides by water. Here you can find the Turkey Point light house and quite an amazing view.
