Do you love SEAFOOD??   If so, then you would have really enjoyed this 4 day seafood-packed dining adventure!!

Weathervane Seafood Restaurant One of my sisters, Karen, came to visit me about a week ago.  She went to high school here in Portsmouth NH, so this was a bit of a memory-tour as well, as she hadn't been back here to visit in a good number of years.  Plus, she wanted to see my 'new' home, which she'd only seen pictures of.

So, we picked her up at the Manchester NH Airport, and pulled a great surprise visit off on another of my sisters, Dale, who lives with her family in Manchester,  about 45 minutes west of me.  We just showed up, and Karen walked in the door a couple minutes later, and stunned Dale.  Needless to say we had great fun with that little surprise!

Dinner that night was in Manchester, at Famous Dave's BarbecueAnd this is where my sister, Karen's, seafood adventure began!

Karen ordered grilled salmon with some kind of pineapple barbecue sauce, and Dale ordered catfish fingers.  Karen ate her salmon, as well as some of the catfish fingers.  The rest of us had yummy barbecue ribs - it would never occur to us to order fish in a rib place, but they did, and they said it was delicious.  We'll take their word for it.....

The next seafood meal was lunch at The Weathervane Seafood Restaurant in Kittery Maine.  The Weathervane Fried Clams Platehas their own fishing fleet, so most of what they serve they also catch.  For those who don't know, New England is one of the world's great seafood capitals, supplying seafood to places all over the country and the world.  Lunch that day was a broiled bay scallop and haddock platter for Karen, and I had fried native Maine shrimp.  Nothing beats fresh New England seafood - YUMMY!!

Wentworth By The Sea Hotel

Our next delicious fresh native seafood lunch was at the historic Wentworth By The Sea Hotel in New Castle NH.  This hotel is on the National Historic Properties Registry, and is just absolutely stunning inside.  The restoration that was done a few years back is just glorious.  They have a lovely restaurant overlooking the island out over to Portsmouth, and their menu is wonderful.

They have just about THE best lobster roll in the whole Seacoast area!  None of the fillers you usually find in most lobter rolls!!  This one is just chock full of fresh lobster meat and just a tiny touch of mayonnaise.  It's served with handcut french fries, and an apple cabbage cole slaw.  The lobster roll is one of our New England frankfurter rolls, grilled with a touch of butter on the outside, and then packed with all this lobster.  There's so much lobster in this roll that you have to eat some of it with your fork just so you can then pick it up and eat it as a sandwich.  They bring out a small dish of hot drawn butter in case you want to drizzle it over the lobster - heavenly!!  Newick's Seafood Restaurant Dover NH

This was the last day of her visit, so my sister, Dale and her family, came over that night for dinner so they could see her before she flew back home to Ohio.  We decided to head to Newick's Seafood Restaurant in Dover NH for this meal.

Newick's, like Weathervane, is a very family-oriented restaurant.  The food is piled high, it's as fresh as fresh can be, with a never-ending supply of fresh warm rolls & butter.  Newick's also has their own fleet of fishing boats to supply their own local seafood.

Fried Seafood Platter

Dinner that night ran the full range of their menu - we had just about everything they offered served at our table that night.  There were 7 of us eating together.

Karen had a seafood sampler platter that had fried baby shrimp, fried scallops, fried clams, and fried haddock nuggets on it.  I had a fried native shrimp and haddock nugget combo plate.  Everyone had some kind of combination of all of that as well.  The only thing missing during that meal was the actual plain boiled or steamed lobster!Lobster Dinner

I think my sister, Karen, got her wish of filling herself full of seafood on this visit!  I think we just about covered it all.  I know her husband was sure wishing he'd been here with her - talk about a seafood lover's dream!!

Now, for her next visit............     ;-))
Come back again very soon, Karen!!

If you're planning a visit here to the Portsmouth New Hampshire areas, make sure to enjoy some of our wonderful native seafood.  I can tell you, once you've eaten it here fresh off the boats, frozen fish somewhere else just won't cut it any more!!  Our local commercial fishing piers here supply seafood for places the world over......make sure you come check out our local seafood for yourself!!
                                                 Portsmouth NH Commercial Fishing Pier

For tips and suggestions on where the locals eat, just give me a call or send me an email - you won't be disappointed!  And if you're thinking of making this great area your home, I'm at your service.......

Monika - you snuck in there while I was still playing around with fixing this post!!!  I am starting to get a little hungry myself!

You HAVE to try the lobster rolls at the Wentworth, if you like lobster that way.  I'm not big on the kind of lobster rolls most think of -celery, onion, lots of mayo - this is SO FULL of lobster meat, you won't believe it.  That little touch of drizzled hot butter is just perfect!!

We had a blast while Karen was here - and as you can see, we indulged ourselves totally on all kinds of seafood!!

Woah! What a fabulous idea for a post! I love seafood (not shellfish, 'cause I stop breathing...) but it is nearly impossible to get truly fresh seafood in Colorado. Guess I will need to go visit you next time I want some fresh seafood!

Rick - they do have a breakfast menu, and their breakfasts are just as good, too, although no lobster that I recall on the breakfast menu.  They have a full breakfast buffet, as well as ordering off the menu.  AND, this pleased me to no end - they serve REAL GRITS!!!  Not those yukky instant packaged kind, but real grits cooked in a pot.  And they're GOOD, too!!  Their breakfast ham is delicious, too - great smoked flavor.

I am REALLY getting hungry now!!!
Thanks for reading and commenting!

Dan and Sandra -  thanks for stopping by.  I've been taking tons of pictures as well!

Monika -  We did have a great time, and of course, her visit was just too short.  She'll be back, and we'll just have to do it all over again.  There are plenty of other great little seafood places we didn't make it to, so we can have another adventure then, too.  Don't you have any lobster in the freezer???  I do!! ;-)

Mariana - Come on out east!!  We'll show you a great time!!  And we have PLENTY of seafood that isn't shellfish, too.  Yeah, I would think it would be pretty hard to get really fresh seafood in CO, at least without paying a pretty penny for it.  You have some fresh water fish there, don't you?  Of course, it's not any thing like our FRESH NEW ENGLAND seafood.....   ;-)

I love Lobster Rolls.  In fact, I have a blog in the hopper for something called "In search of the perfect Lobster Roll"   I plan to do the "research" this summer. Yum!  I like them the way you do!   This was a great post Ann.  In fact, with your permission I'd like to link to it from a blog I'm working on about day trips in New England.  (On my other blog!)

I love fish, I love shellfish.  Trips to the east coast are some of my favorite vacations..

You can get fresh seafood in lots of the country though now Ann and I don't know that it is that expensive anymore. We have a couple of great seafood restaurants in town with fresh fish flown in daily.  It is worth it ....  It is not like it was 20 years ago....  Still I love to visit New England and  the mid Atlantic states in the spring, summer and fall... I don't believe I have ever been there in the winter.

Linda - thanks for asking about linking to this post - please do and I'm honored to be asked!  For your research, go to Mystic CT and go to a place called Abbott's Lobster - they have both the traditional lobster roll, as well as a hot lobster roll.  That is THE best I've EVER had - it's served on a grilled hamburger roll, a huge scoop of hot lobster, and a little cup of hot drawn butter.  The day we found that place, we were in heaven!!  Bear likes the lobster salad type lobster roll - cold with mayo, celery, etc.  I LOVE the hot lobster sandwich.  It was so good, I went to the window and got another one!!  Yep, that's exactly what I did.  I've thought about that hot lobster sandwich many times since then, and wondered if a 3 hour drive was too far to go for one sandwich.........   ;-)

Maureen - thanks for reading.  I'm sure fresh fish can be had in plenty of places when it's flown in, but nothing beats having native seafood fresh off the boats without it having to be flown anywhere, and I know the prices here all year long are lower than places where it's flown in.  In my travels around the country, I've seen the prices on menus for seafood, plenty of it called "New England", and the prices always make me say no thanks and wait till I get home.  When my sister was here, she couldn't believe the prices she was seeing for full dinners compared to what they pay in her area.

Winter, spring, summer, and fall - we've got great seafood and plenty of other fun reasons for visiting this area!  Come for a visit!

I'll let you know when I write the story, Ann.  It's in my blog incubator.

I've been to Abbotts which is in Noank, CT.  I live about 15 minutes from there. Right around the corner is  Ford's Lobster where we pick out fresh lobster out of the tank to cook at home several times during the summer. As far as Lobster rolls, my other favorite is Captain Scott's on the river in New London.  It is served about the same way as Abbotts.  It is also a nice setting!  Ok, now I'm hungry.

Linda - Mystic is what I associate with that whole area, as I don't know the area other than that one trip.  We also had ribs at a really good place somewhere in that area, too, but now I can't remember the name of it.  Seems to me it was near something associated with the military.  The restaurant had won awards several times for best ribs, as I recall.  Anyway, they were really good. This trip was about 2-3 years ago.

I'm still hungry!!

We used to time our weekend trips to Maine to include lunch at the Weathervane but the traffic keeps getting heavier so we usually do an early morning or overnight drive.

Ann...

Okay. I must need to eat something :)

This made me hungry. What's worse is that I have a craving for haddock. As I am in Florida that ain't gonna happen.

Hmmm. Lobster Newberg and a nice expensive bottle of wine would be nice :)

Oooo. How about champagne on a Sunday? Dom Perignon would good right now. I could throw a little orange juice in it and call it Brunch :)

Dan and Sandra - thanks for stopping by!  You're right, traffic everywhere seems be heavier than it used to be....guess it also depends on the time of year as well.  Too bad some of these really good places aren't open 24 hours, huh??  ;-)

TLW - Nope, haddock likely won't happen down there......Mimosas??  Sounds good - a little dash of oj always does a body good!!

I had an excellent time in beautiful Portsmouth.  I really do miss that part of the country.  I'm here in the Dayton Ohio area, which I really do love BUT there is no place more beautiful than the New England area.  No offense intended, Mid-westerners!

The only delight that my sister, Ann did not mention was the after-lunch drink we had at the Wentworth with our remaining butter!  I'm just kidding - Ann didn't do that!

Thanks for the awesome visit Ann!

Love ya, Karen

Hi Ann

Originally from MA, went to high school in NH, I truely miss the fresh seafood especially lobster, and scallops.  People from Seattle seem to want to pawn off lobster from Hawaii, they have no idea how good fresh seafood is.  Well, maybe they do, however i am biased. I love the post.  It kind of inspires me to do a coffee post.  Since Seattle is known for coffee and I feel, I've become quite the coffee expert.

I'm surprised with all that sea food no one got iodine poisoning...I don't know if it's an age thing or not but if I have crab for lunch and then crab salad for dinner, then the next day have lobster I end up swelling. Jay - bummer about no lobster last night.  How about tonight?  Thanks for the heads up on the gold star!!

Sharon - I LOVE that kind of variety!  After all, isn't that what life's all about - variety?!?!!?  Have you ever tried fried lobster?  Both Newick's and Weathervane have it on their menu.  Initially, I admit it sounds pretty gross, but it is SO DELICIOUS!!  Yep, bad for ya, but ooooohhh sooooo yummmmmmmy!!

Randy - Aloha!!  I've been to your gloriously beautiful state, and I've had some of your fresh local seafood.  As good as that is, I still love New England offerings better.  Great seafood in San Francisco, too.

Danny - Thanks for that great feedback - I really appreciate it!  Come on up for a visit - you'll love it up here.  I agree completely about barbecue - there definitely are regional differences, and with as much fabulous food as we have up here in this area, a really good barbecue place isn't one of them.  I LOVE barbecue meats, and get really bummed at times that we don't have a good place to go to here.  I grew up all over the country (Air Force Brat!), and have sampled b-b-cue from all over the place.  I love that you said you read all the menus - I'm a sucker for reading menus, too.   ;-)

Hi Gena - I'm so glad you stopped by!  Funny you should mention iodine - I periodically have an allergic reaction to the iodine in shrimp.  It's been a long time since that happened.  I always carry Benadryl for allergic reactions.  You know, until you mentioned that, I hadn't thought about that kind of a reaction in a long time, which means it hasn't happened to me in a really long time.  When I was growing up, it happened frequently.  I must have grown out of it, which does happen as my doctor had told me.

Glad you liked the menus - I love checking out menus online for restaurants I might go to.  We can thank the internet for being able to do that!
