Something has been chewing your wires in

the attic of your Sacramento home

There are a lot of things that are going on in the attics and crawl spaces of the homes in Sacramento. Unless you have a reason to get up in the attic space or crawl around under your home, you probably are unaware of some of the things that may lead to trouble in the future. What kind of things are we talking about?

The list can be quite long. Water leaks, animal nesting, and broken duct work to name a few. I got a chance to see a dangerous condition that is developing today. It could lead to a power failure or shock.

As you can see in the photo, an animal of some sort has been chewing on the power lines in the attic. Judging by the “droppings” that I saw, it is probably one or more rats. These rats have been gnawing on the insulation surrounding the power lines to an apartment.

If the rat chews long enough, there is a chance that it will be electrocuted and the power circuit “tripped”. You may not even know it is happening until it does. But there is a danger in the current condition.

Anyone who is working up in this area could easily walk on these wires. I did not see this until I brushed away the insulation looking for something else. Imagine my surprise if the wires were exposed and I brushed the live wires with my hand. Not good!

This Sacramento building is not rare, rats do this on occasion. This needs to be corrected and the rodent problem alleviated. The owners probably have no idea that this is happening in the attic but will be notified of the findings soon.

Tom,

We have seen our share as well with pests trying to cut their teeth on wires and pipes. Don't use poison....

makes them thirsty and if you have pex plumbing they will go through that to get water.  Glue traps are best.

Interesting.  One would think that the person living below that area of the attic might hear some scampering, either from the ceiling or walls.  Many years ago, I owned a condo and during the night I could hear rats scampering in the outside wall.

I am a rodent-phobic. If I knew this was going on in my attic, I'd get out immediately.

Tom, I've run a number service calls where a rodent chewed through a line. Actually, we're fixing one next week where a groundhog chewed through a well line. I've seen a few mice still attached to a line where they bit through, was electrocuted but the line was damaged enough to trip. Over time. the line became more of a problem until they do stop allowing current to flow, but they're not tripping breakers. We find the just like you did, sweeping insulation away.

Tom, here we have a lot of issues with raccoons using attics and chimneys to house their young.  I had quite an adventure a couple of years ago with critters, and luckily got them out before they did damage.

Tom: growing up in Southern California our neighbor's house burst into flames because a mouse was chewing on wires.  Burned the house to the ground.  Very dangerous!

Glad to hear that you were able to solve the problem before the damages were done Pat. Animals can be a problem.

I didn't have any idea that rats would chew on the insulation.  Hmm something to be aware of for sure.

A few years ago I won a household bet about hearing critters "up there". I put a trap with peanut butter on it and heard it deploy a few minutes later.  The loser of the bet said, "Now what are you going to do with the dead rat in your attic." I said, call Truly Nolan and let him haul it out. lol I don't do rat guts.

It's a whole different world in those dark places Joan.  :)

Imagine stumbling across this up close while dripping in sweat on a hot summer day Myrl. I had to get away, this was not the only spot where it was found.

Funny story Chris. Peanut butter is my favorite bait!
