Vehicle Traffic to Ice Caves Suspended at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Madeline Island Realty 50317-90

Due to deterioration of the shoreline approach resulting from warm weather, the Park Service has suspended vehicle traffic access to the Ice Caves at the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.

While there is no longer access to the ice caves by vehicle permitted, foot traffic is still allowed.  There is a $3.00 daily parking fee at the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore parking area (Meyers Beach) for ice caves visitors.  Meyers Beach is located eighteen miles west of Bayfield, Wisconsin, off Highway 13.

Check out this article from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel online, by Dennis McCann, about the ice caves at Myers Beach.

For information and daily ice condition updates, please call the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore Ice Caves Hotline, at 715-779-3397, extension 3.

Eric,  I don't know if I like the idea of walking into an ice cave.  Sounds a little scary to me.

VA, the ice caves at Meyers Beach are really beautiful!  It's perfectly safe to visit them, as long as the National Park Service says the ice conditions are good.  Standing inside the caves, you'll see huge ice stalactites and stalagmites, and the light filtering through the ice gives the interior of the caves a deep bluish tinge.  The ice caves are a photographer's dream!  I'll try to upload a photo if I can locate one.

Tom, it's really a great experience!  The ice caves have a very high ceiling..you won't get claustrophobia while touring them.  Some visitors backback in, on skis.  Bring a camera and pack a lunch.  At this time of year, the air is fairly warm, sometimes a bit above freezing if the sun is shining.  The ice beneath the caves is thick and close to shore, so the water depth is pretty shallow beneath your feet.

Bill & Barbara Jo -- The ice caves are a popular tourist attraction, and one of the unique features of Lake Superior's south shore area.
