The Joys and Pains of Working From A Home Office

Working from a home office can bring both joy and pain. If one is not careful, it can bring a serious downside to one's business. Yes working from home provides some freedoms but when not managed properly these freedoms can be the death of any good business. Training your family members is crucial, even the ones that do not reside with you. Be sure to clearly explain to your family that despite being at home, your only focus during work hours is WORK! Treat each day like a work day. You must get up, get dressed in business attire and then proceed to work as if you were truly in a large corporate setting. Working from home in pajamas or casual clothing could possibly hinder your overall effectiveness by not placing you in a fully professional mind-set. Be focused and practice self discipline.

Keisha, my hat is off to you if you can do it.  I enjoy playing with my kids way too much to work at home.

Marc,

It is a definite balancing act at all times. My children need constant reminders that while I am working it is not okay to burst into my office or go screaming down the hallways. Come to think of it, my husband needs those same reminders....oh what a life!

Keisha:  I work exclusively from home, and at first, doing the "pajama" thing was quite a hindrance.  Then I started getting totally dressed, make-up... and all... then got into my car, either drove around the block and back home, or drove thru a drive-thru for a breakfast burrito, and then came home... just like going to the office.  Believe it or not, it worked for me !

Karen-

I am a firm believer in getting dressed each day and ready for business throughout the entire work day. I believe that it will completely change your level of motivation and focus. I work about 50% from home office and 50% from my franchise office. If I am not in business attire, then I consider that a day off (even if I have my lap top on and phone to my ear). I'm glad your tactics have worked for you! Maybe I should try including a breakfast burrito whenever my motivation begins to dwindle. Thanks for commenting.

I agree with the getting dressed thing---I work partially from a home office- and partially from my work office- I get dressed each day- as if I were going to the work office- I always find myself needing to go out or some reason or another anyway- so this works best for me

I feel I must get out of the house to get real work done.  My young one would easily take up my whole day...and i'd let her!

Keisha- It pains me to say, but it is too hard for me to work at home.  I get sidetracked by laundry, phonecalls, something needs to be fixed, etc..  I need to go into the office.  I tried....it doesn't work for me.  Hats off to those that can do it!

Keisha: Wow, where are the rest of the home workers? I love it because I can start my day when I want [5am; ActiveRain and emails]. Break for the kids [6:30 -7:30am] and start my day over. If I have an outside appointment, I am up and dressed. But some days, especially in the winter, I would start a fire and thank God I didn't have to leave. And stay in my PJs.

Everyone is right though, you must have a plan. I do and by mid-day I have usually completed my goals. Nine A.M. is my start time to make calls and usually I am finished with my 25 contacts by 2 pm. There are days in which I am out the house at 8am and not back until late afternoon. But not often. I try to be home for the kids and now that my mom is living with me (stroke victim), I will be even closer to home.
